First of all this is my first post here so hello to everyone... I use other forums but this one seems best for gecko's obviously lol..

So I ended up taking in this tokay which was not being properly cared for....

looks like a nice enclosure for now, you might want to add some more places to hide for it like some cork tubes or even a log house.
Im not an expert but it looks like a male to me.
Have you heard any mating calls at night?

Yeah definatly needs more stuff but for quarentine it should do. No mating calls yet only had him a few nights but he is roaming around at night.

Nice enclosure! I do agree however that you should add some more plants or logs for him or her to hide. One way to sex them is to rub your finger over the vent, if it feels waxy, its a male

Hahaha... yeah ill pass on that method for the tokay... shes not exactly down with the belly rubs lol, but thanks for the tip.

It is a male. If you look close at the vent picture you can see a waxy substance coming out of the pores.

Like everyone else said the cage looks good except it needs a better spot for him to hide if he wants to.

I was also gonna say male, but grats it looks like a nice fat healthy tokay! Good on you for rescuing him! :)

Hm,

remember tokays are arboreal lizards. If they have the chance, they avoid to go to the ground at all. In your tank the animal has no choice but hiding in the cave on the ground.
This is extremely unatural and puts strong stress on the animal. You might not see signs of stress, but I guarantee, this animal is permanently heavily stressed.
Also the tank by far is not tall enough. A 1 ft arboral lizard should have the chance to climb vertically for at least 4 to 5 feet. And that is still a short distance relative to its size. Recommended mimimum height for a tokay tank should be 4 ft-which is well accepted in Europe but for some strange reason is not liked by many US keepers. The branches you have installed in your tank may be nice for your eye, but hey are of no use for the gecko. Tokays prefer to climb on surfaces exceeding their body diameter and avoid branches of small diameter if they do have the choice. Also they need some security and shelter to be confident not to be seen but be able to see everything themselves. Thus a tokay tank has to be heavily furnished with really thick branches and logs, needs a fake bark or rock backwall with vertical crevices large enough to hide in, rathe dense foliage and enough place to run around.
Your tank my be sufficient for a pair of pictus or sth. But it definitely is nothing I would keep a tokay in other than for quarantine.
Sorry for the strict words, but I am convinced you do want the best for your pets and just do not know better. There is so much inappropriate information on herp husbandry readily available that it might not be easy to select the reasionable stuff from all the crap.

Hey, that tokay has a very strong vibrant color, so start breedin him soon! Actually though I think you should have left him in the hex tank with some pothos wrapping up the branches because this tank is too short for him, then you could put the big Eyed tree frogs in the tank that he is in now. Hope everything goes well!

Hey, do not feel offended, ist all just about animal care and how to provide best conditions.
Anyhow, I stick to every point I said and believe me, endocrinological diagnosis would still find high stress markers in your animal (this kind of analysis is well established for tokays).
Luckily its easy and cheap to build you own appropriately sized tokay enclusore. Just use coated chipboard, make the botom part waterproof by pont foil and insert sliding glass in the front which you may take from old windows. Contruct a fake rock or bark backwall and ready you are. Costs you less than 100 bucks for a 100 gallon. and on the technical side you do not need expensive stuff for tokays either.
Also it is much fun building your own custom made enclosure.
To encourage you: Here is an example of a tokay enclosure of 44 X 24 X 55" which I build within one day:

And here is one more example of enclosures I built this way:

Its easy, cheap and much better for your tokay than what you have now.
Give it a try!!!!

Thanks for the info and pics...
I have some melamine to build an enclosure but still waiting on more materials... I will post progress if I ever get started on it.
Also its not gonna be ideal for the tokay either since the dimensions of each enclosure will be 4'x2'x2' (LxWxH) and can't be oriented since its actually two 2'x2'x8' cabinets stacked... heres a pic of the design...

I'm still working on it.

Maybe i can make a taller corner unit for the tokay one day.

Springtech, I dont keep mine in 100g aquariums either and they have done fine for years now. Ingo is right bigger is always better but they can do just fine in something smaller than 100gal. I have kept them that way and I know alot of other people who have for years and the tokays are still alive and thriving.

Heres my progress so far...

Im trying to get it done as soon as I can so then I can hopefully get on to building a new Tokay enclosure. Since I feel so guilty now :(

So do you think one side of this enclosure would be better to pput him into untill I can build a bigger one?
or would the stress of catching and moving him to a new enviroment be unecessary, since he seems to be doing very well now?
Comment appreciated. Thank you

I was planning on using these enclosures for rescue/adopted snakes and/or terstial lizards....
But do you guys think I should use half of this enclosure for the tokay?
Its definatly a bigger space but its not exactly an aboreal setup, because of its shape and it might have humidity issuess with the perferated back.
So the tokays current tank is 12"Dx20"Hx30"L, where as half of this new enclosure is 24"Dx24"Hx48"L
So what do you think?
Thank you in advance.
