Bought me a leo!

I bought my first leo today =)

He/she is around 6 inches long, so I think (I'll just say he) is a sub adult? You tell me =).

I have 2 meal worms in his food dish just incase, although, I know he probaly won't eat yet.

Warm side is 89-92 (above the UTH).

Cool side is around 77-79.

I picked him up, and lowered my hand into the cage ground level, the first thing he did was move into the humid hide. He fell asleep, his eyes are now closed, is this bad that he fell asleep so quickly? Or does he just like the nice cozy paper roll in there? =p

I checked his stomache, no blue marks...

His tail seems a little thin but I can fatten it up =).

Hi Austin :)

Well first off congrats about your first leo! Just beware, they seem to multiply rather quickly lol!

Temps sound good, but like I said on the other thread, do not let the UTH get any hotter than the mid 90s, ideally it should be 88-92 degrees (in my experience).

He probably fell asleep so quickly because he is stressed and trying to forget what just happened haha! Sleeping is good, hes obviously somewhat comfortable :)

I would throw between 2-5 mealies in the bowl (as long as they aren't getting out everywhere). Sprinkle some calcium powder in the bottom of the bowl, and the mealies will coat themselves.

Good luck, and again congrats! Definitely get some pics :)

Thanks =)

I have 4 mealies in there now, with calcium on them.

In the "mealie dish" they're in I put a piece of carrot, so they can eat it. Is that a problem?

Nope, I know people that do that.

You do have them in a gut load though, correct? In the container they came in? Not just the saw dust, or whatever.

No, there in the saw dust.

Where can I buy this gutload? Is it just called meal worm gutload?

and can I wait until tommorrow to get it?

I just go to our local Fred Meyer's and get the bulk bin oatmeal. I know some people use bran flakes, etc. If you google it, you can find all the different meal worm bedding/gut load people use. For moisture, just like you're doing, carrots on top of the bedding. I know I must be doing something right...I have some FAT mealies :D!!

wow! you do have fat mealies, you should see the ones I bought. Not even close to yours...

What are the worms that can eat through your gecko from the inside out?

I'm probaly just going to stick with a diet of meal worms and throw in crickets every now and then, but for future reference i don't want a eaten gecko.

Lol I'm sure you are talking about superworms. Mostly people hear that from pet store clerks. They will also tell you to cut the head off before feeding. I think I almost peed my pants laughing the first time I heard that  In my half decade of gecko keeping/breeding I have never had an issue with superworms. Of course, you do not feed them to hatchlings, as supers are exactly what their name suggests...verrrry large. I noticed my geckos got healthier on supers and roaches, than regular mealies. I currently am feeding giant mealies from a supplier in the North West, but will switch to supers once all my little ones from this year are large enough :)

Okay thanks for laughing at me! Gosh....

Lol jk thanks for telling me the thing about the supers.

The mealies I have in the bowl are not very active at all.. They sit there and once in a while move around a bit, I don't see how it would be enough movement to attract a gecko though.

He ate 6 meal worms tonight! On the 1st night I've had him!.

So exited, but they weren't really gutloaded, the next ones will be.

Congrats on your first leo. Looks like a nice normal to me. It's actually refreshing to see someone get a normal. You don't see them very often these days.

Thank you :).
Is there a trick to getting mealworms more active while in their feeding dish?
When I was feeding him (or her...I'll say him) I fed him off a plastic fork. Because the mealworms weren't moving, so I thought he wouldn't try to eat them. He ate them right off the fork because I was moving it a little. The worms do move, just not very much. He ate one out of the bowl that was having a siezure or something..it was wriggling like crazy! =o
