Price Drop!!

I have noticed the prices on all Nephrurus species have been dropping like crazy recently. What are the reasons behind this? For example, a juvenile 1.1 Amyae used to cost $2300 now its like $1400.

A. The prices were super inflated to begin with
B. Their are more around, some Nephrurus, like wheeleri can be very productive.
C. The economy sucks now, so not a lot of people are buying, so prices are being lowered to help make things move out.

Also, there is a H-U-G-E glut of geckos on the market at this time. When the supply is high and demand is low, prices go down...

I think with the problems a few of the species bring...their prices should remain high. N. deleani, laevissimus, amyae and stellatus should remain steady. It's N. levis, pilibarnethsis, occidentalis and wheeleri that are quite prolific from my understanding...I remember asper even being VERY productive, hmm? Where are they at?

I agree with all three of Derek's points. Like any other market, the market for geckos has ebbs and flows. It's a lot harder right now to get someone to dish out $1000+ for a gecko when their house is about to be foreclosed on or they've been laid off. Things will come back around eventually. But let's face it, in the grand scheme of things, for most people, geckos are luxury purchase and not a necessity.

On the matter of money

People have always attempted to get whatever they felt there geckos were worth regardless of what a market value was placed on these geckos. Only to find out that there is no market value.. The sale is contingent on how badly you need funds. That is the motivating force especially during these times where one cannot even get a car loan !

Whatever the sale is, guaranteed that the buyer will be sitting on these animals for a long time and if its for a resale value, its a bad buy. If its for a personal value of having some of these wonderful animals, then the purchase will be well worth it.. In either case, supply and demand is not the driving force . There are allot of people who need the money more then the animals. Its really that simple.. As to whether the animals are worth the price.. Whatever someone is willing to pay sometimes amazes me. Look at Ball python prices. Eventually someday that will crash as well.. JERRY:)

True. Even for me as a breeder, a gecko I might think is a necessity has become a luxury! LOL!

I agree with everything already said. There is a guy on kingsnake.com that has 0.0.5 Goniurosaurus splendens for $175 shipped each (I bought mine for 200 ea last year) and has had them up since atleast september and hasnt even sold one! So its not just Nephrurus.

If you think the price of geckos

dropped or diminished in value, take a look at the home market.. That is really something to cry about !

And there are another point... there are countries like Italy, Portugal, Spain and others where it´s imposible find nephrurus, diplodactylus, etc... There are a very small market and we have to visit internacional shows to pick up this animals... In this countries prices not use get down...

I agree with derek´s point already... regards!!

yeah all good points Derek, Jerry, etc. I don't see how you can be so desperate for animals in Spain Seonage? Europe has animals of all kinds. Buying 'american' produced animals for Europeans with the dollar/euro xchange rate may not be the worst idea if the animals are bought in some kind of bulk at a show. I hear you about having to go to Germany to pick up animals, that's a far ride and i have no clue about shipping within the EU.
