Over the weekend i got my first reptile rack, its by reptile basics(awsome people btw!). Its really wonderful and Iwas going tobuy hides from them for the racks but had my hands rather full so I didn't. So now Im looking at cheap ways to create or buy hides. Anyone have any ideas? one of the breeders I got 2 of my girls from used the bottom sof plastic planters cut in half, but now walmart and lowes near me only sell clear ones. I tried the clay ones and the babies have no problems using them but the adults dont seemt o care for them at all. I saw one website that had a neat idea of using some kind of plastic box with a hole cut in the middle for a moist hide to be put into it, but now I can't remember which website it was and I have no idea what they used. Any ideas would be wonderful, thanks for looking and double thanks if you reply!

You can use "gladware" type bowls w/ a hole cut in the lid. Or, as you said, plastic flower planters (now that Spring is here, stores should be stocking up on them again. Try your local nurseries). Or you can use cork bark or aquarium caves, etc from your local pet store. Empty margerine tubs work. Or you can use none at all since they're going to be living inside a plastic box anyway. Honestly, you can use pretty much anything you want assuming that it wont rot or rust.

What I have been using is the little plastic containers that you get lunch meat out of. They have red or green lids. I cut a hole in the lid and put vermiculite in there and they love it. They can climb on it and use it as a hide.

Walmart has container at 98 cents for 2 that are "gladware" type. They have blue lids and I clear the shelves every few months

You don't say what rack you got though. If it was the adult rack these will work, the hatchling rack won't.

I save lunch meat and margarine containers too, they work reallt well. I even go as far as saving plastic lids from mayo and peanut butter lars they make great water dishes. I just need to find a dish that mealies can't climb out of.

oh sorry yes I got the adult rack. In one of the tubs I put my females moist hide in there..I just thought it would be nice to have something dark because in the early afternoon until the sun goes down, it shines right into my window and lights up the whole rack...I could cover it up with a towel to give them darkness..but that might trap to much heat. I live in FL and we are in need of a new ac unit um so my house gets pretty hot even with the windows open. I almost don't need extra heating!..well almost..:)
but these are all wonderful ideas. I think i will take a look at walmarts kitchen area again, as well as see what the local plant nursers have.

I use just a moist hide/ laybox in my racks. A photo period is healthy for them, so no need to worry about day light.

Ah florida, the land of the perfect leopard gecko weather :)

I have been thinking about using plastic gutters for roofs as hides. Then you would only need one hide for both the cool and warm end.
If you take 1 piece of gutter, cut it to the length of the tub, make a hole in the middle and plug the ends with gutterends. then the gecko could move to the right temperature and still feel securely hidden. Just like in a Afghanistan rockwall. :)

For moist hides I use this box:

Hammarplast Consumer - Storage - SmartStoreâ„¢ Classic 2 storage box with lid

With a 1,5 inch hole in the roof or side.

Peace
