Temporary housing

What would be a suitable temporary housing for a single crestie? I mean acrylic wise (needs to be cheap) for about a week? Im looking into changing my viv.

Thanks :)

What age is the crestie? Is it an adult yet or just a few months? A large cricket keeper would do fine for anything around 6 months or under.

Another option is to get a tupperware bin which is very cheap. They come in a variety of sizes. You can easily cut some large holes in it and hot glue some screening on and also put small holes in the sides with a drill or soldering iron.

They make great temporary enclosures for cleaning / transporting or anything else you may need. I'm actually trying to make some of these containers into a nice habitat for some of my juvie cresties.

Attached is a pic of what I'm talking about. There are also some beatuiful setups on this forum using similar containers if you do a search or look in the DIY section. Check out the post #23 and #25 in this thread ..... http://www.geckosunlimited.com/comm...latus/36974-uroplatus-plastic-containers.html.

Since it's only for a week I'm sure that almost any size the crestie can move around in will be fine. However since these tubs come in a variety of sizes you can choose the size that best fits your crestie and likely not spend over $20.

Like I said ... some people make permanent enclosures for cresties using these containers. So you can choose whatever works best for you.

Good Luck. :)

Hey, now that's a great idea for many species! I was reading up on cresties (which is why i'm in this section), and if you keep the juvies in anything bigger than a 10 gallon, they stress out. So why not give them a nice secure plastic box. Plus you can have a few on hand for if one of your critters needs QT or to take to the vet, etc. I'm going to go get 2 or 3 containers. I have a huge roll of screen - I'll make some nice screen holes, and voila - emergency or temporary housing for my babies! And they stack so nicely, they can just be on a shelf in the garage until you need them! :)

you can sometimes find a used 10 gal for cheap. throw it on its side with a paper towel substrate. and a few fake plants and you done.
and i don't agree with the "juvies get stressed in anything more the a ten gal" concept. i'm not saying your wronge, but these guys are born into the whole world, they are not confined to 10 gal of space. i have mine in the same tank she is in now (exo terra 18x18x24) when she was less the 6 months old and she ran around all night and went back to sleep in the same spot every morning. she found the food and water bowl the first few nights and hunted crickets the second week.

I don't even have a crestie yet, so don't take what I say as the only way to do things. I'm just reporting what I read on a care sheet. And when I said juvies, I should have said new hatchlings - I think the care sheet said anything younger than 4 months should be kept in a small enclosure (no bigger than 10 gal).

The point I was trying to make is that your hatchlings and younger-than-4 month olds can be kept in a plastic box like they described... That's all.

no no i'm not flaming you or anything. you looking for information and i'm just giving my opinion. i'm not saying your wrong, and i'm deff not saying i'm right. i haven't kept enough geckos to be right! i'm just sharing my opinion about that concept. the onlything i would worry about is the height. i would hate for a hatchling to fall before having any meat on thier bones. but tank size i don't think is an issue. as long as there is a lot of cover they should feel secure... maybe pplace the food bowl closer to where the gecko hides incase their sence of smell is not as good when they are that younge.

LOL .. I didn't think you were flaming me. :) I was just clarifying that I have NO experience with cresties. :) And that, from what I read, a small plastic enclosure could be perfect for a new hatchling. No hard feelings? :)

I haven't tried putting young cresties in anything overly large yet. If anything most of their enclosures are a bit small for them which I'm working on with some of the plastic bins. However I have read several posts that say young cresties may have a hard time finding live food (ie crickets) in an enclosure with a vast amount of space. I've always thought that concept a bit odd but I guess it makes sense in a way although I've never tested it.

The other advantage to plastic bins is that they're light weight and easy to bring to a sink or tub to clean out. And smaller bins make great transportation enclosures ... but then so does a small cardboard box.

I just started breeding cresties last year and my collection is growing so I will need to find some way of keeping any that I want to grow out. I think that many exo-terras or tanks can not only get expensive but as previously mentioned are not as easy to store and clean out as the plastic bins.

I've also started building some small enclosures out of coroplast and sintra which are signage materials that can be purchased fairly cheap. I'm holding them together with aquarium silicone and using thin plexi for the front and screening for the top. These will be used for any hatchlings up to a couple months of age whenever I get them finished.

I do really like the exo-terras or similar enclosures for showing any of my gekcos off but I really like the lighter weight, ease of cleaning and price tag on the plastic bins. So I will likely always have a few of each kicking around depending on what I need them for.
