thanks! I really like the orange cresties...then again I am probably biased since I'm a Longhorn fan. Speaking of, I just noticed this:

haha!!

I agree about Petco, I always want to take all the reptiles home with me and "rescue" them. If only I could...

I saw the most sad Leos in Petco a couple weeks ago. All of them were shedding, but still had lots of skin stuck all over them. It was terrible. The tank was too dry, and they just couldn't get a full shed. Every single one was listless and sad. :(

I don't even keep Leos and I knew it was bad. :p

But my Petco doesn't have cresties! I want one!

i totally agree, petco houses their leo's horribly. I think the worst part about it is that they use calci-sand, the worst possible substrate

thanx MsShlee!

yea they are $49.99 here too. Sometimes they do specials for $39.99.

I have also considered working there in my spare time to help take care of the animals. Some stores are better than others, but it always upsets me when I see them doing things completely wrong. (size large crickets for juvi reptiles, wrong substrates, sickly looking animals) Sometimes the caresheets even give wrong information!!

Almost every time i go to a pet store with reptiles they have WAY too many crickets in the enclosures , like they are climbing all over the place

Imo it's just as bad to do that as it is to underfeed them

No, you sir are wrong, we don't use calci-sand thank god, we use Zoo Med Kritterz sand in my store, its exactly the same as Repti-sand, just a different name. If it was up to me they'd be on paper towels, but if you look at it from a business perspective that's a terrible idea, we don't sell paper towels, we sell sand, I recommend the Repti-carpet to my customers.

Yeah I was referring to leos and beardies, the cresteds are on repti-bark, its so funny when customers want to look at them and I reach down into the substrate and pull out a burrowed one.

I was lucky

I just bought my first crested gecko yesterday. I was smart and did a lot of research before I looked around at prices. I specifically chose a crested because of their lower temperature requirements.

I went to both a small pet store and a petsmart first. At both places, I was told I would need a regular heat lamp, like the ones I use for my bearded dragons. When I asked about the lower temperatures, one guy even told me I could do whatever and if I killed my gecko, it wasn't their fault. I was really disappointed. I started to think that maybe I misread all the information.

My last stop was at petco, just to check prices. They had 5 or 6 small ones for $50 each. A woman came to help me and brought each of them to the front so I could pick one. She told me which substrate I should get because it holds moisture well. Then she made sure to inform me about what temperature and humidity to keep my tank, and even pointed out which bulbs to use if the room temperature is too low. Everything was clean, and she seemed to really care about the animals.

It makes me really sad to hear that people use animals just to make themselves money without caring about the fact that they are living creatures. I'm glad I was lucky enough (well, my little gecko was lucky enough) to have a good experience. I just hope he's as healthy and happy as he seems.

My mum worked at Petco for quite a while - the only reason the animals were well cared for at the stores she was sent to was because she busted her backside to make sure they were happy. Their Creteds have always been gorgeous, though. She works at PetSmart now - MUCH better company!
This one is especially pretty! Well done. ^.^ She looks quite healthy and happy. :D
