false bottoms explained?

I keep seeing people refer to false bottoms in vivs, but I can't find a full explanation of exactly what one is, how to make one, and why you would want one. I have some problems keeping humidity up for my Phelsuma and I get the impression one my help, but I'm not too sure. Thanks!

thanks, that is definitely a great and thorough page. i already have 4 basic vivs running with Phelsuma, i'm definitely going to try adding some inverts for enhanced clean-up duty.
