How to keep big plants small?

I'm working on a viv for some P m grandis, and I love the look of plants like Bird of Paradise, Philodendron bipinnatifidum, Philodendron xanadu, etc. but my tank is only 18" x 18" x 24"h. Is there a way to keep plants like this small? If I trim each leaf off as it gets too big will the plant continue sending up new growth?

i think you'd probably have to preen like crazy if you want to keep it small
