Missed an EGG!! ( Maybe two! )

Well .... I have a good sized enclosure that I kept my breeding trio in. I removed the male back in January and thought that the females had finally stopped laying eggs. In fact I hadn't found an egg for several months so I put one of the females in with another new male. ( Found two eggs from that pair today :) ) Since then I've added 3 more females that are approaching adulthood in that enclosure so I now have a female only enclosure.

However ... last night while spraying I found a baby crestie on substrate in this enclosure with the mother WATCHING it. I quickly scooped it out and put it in it's own small enclosure. Now I've heard that baby cresties may not last long in with adults and there were FOUR in with this one. So I'm not sure if I was lucky or perhaps cresties don't eat the babies very often. But I'll be sure to keep my eye out for a second one in the coming nights. I may even scour the substrate to find the other egg.

I've had 4 hatch out in the adult tank as well. It's a jungle in there and I wasnt planning on really getting any babies from them this year, just letting them do their thing. All my little guys were good too, I doubt I'd ever test that by leaving them in theere for any length of time though!

Yes ... it was a nice surprise!! ;-)

I sifted through the substrate and found one more viable egg along with several that had dried out. The male has been out of the enclosure since January but I didn't cool them down .... which I will definitely be doing this winter.

Next season I will have about 5 breeding females so I should have lots of babies. Now to figure out where to put all of them. LOL
