I was cleaning my enclosures so I temporarily put my geckos in a tub. I have done this many times without problem.
The male is 10 months old, and around 70grams, while the female is 8 months old and 65 grams. I read somewhere that females should be a year old at least to breed, and that if she's not ready to breed, she will refuse the male's attemps to mate. So i wasn't expecting any problem with them being together for a few minutes.
They were busy trying to climb out of the tub, i went to the kitchen to wash their food/water dishes and when i came back, they were mating. The male's jaw was clamped tight on the female's neck, so i could not separate them. And the male continued with his moves even if i tried a lot to separate them. i tried spraying them with water and making noises, tapping the tub really loud. but the male won't let go. so i waited. i immediately removed the female once the male was done.
I hope that the mating will not be successful because i think my female is too young. but if ever she does lay eggs, what harm will it do? most care sheets say that early breeding can cause "health problems". but i have not seen anything specific. "problems" are really vague. i hope somebody here can identify what those problems are. and what i can do to mitigate the effects.
p.s. - i did some more reading after the incident, and i think the female is showing signs of her ovulating. she has a fat tummy, and whitish "balls" are visible.
