When to introduce geckos?

I have a full grown female crestie... she is probably about 2 years old and weighs close to 50 grams. (Fatty! :D) I also have a 7 month old juvenile who is showing signs of a bulge under his tail but I can't say for certain that it's a male yet. He currently weighs 14.2 grams and has been gaining at least 0.5 grams per week.

I was planning to wait until around April to introduce the two geckos, but I wasn't sure if the younger one would be big enough by then. I know that it's best to wait until they are comparable in size, but it would take forever for him to get up to her size. What would be an acceptable size/weight for him to be before introducing him into her tank?

Yep, it may take awhile for him to gain that but keep in mind that males lose when when they begin breeding, just likes females do so you don't want to send in a male that's already on the smaller size.

Also, a 50 gram female can do a lot of damage to a male that is too small.

Wow... I guess I was pretty clueless when I got my baby gecko last fall. I was thinking that I would let him grow over the winter then introduce him to my female in the spring and they'd be having babies by summer! Haha... there's still a lot to learn.:blushing: Guess I'll keep up with his feedings and try to grow him at super-speed :D

If he does perhaps make it up to 35 grams before the end of this year, would you suggest adding him to her tank right away? Is it okay to introduce them during the winter, or should I still hold off until next spring?

If he gains enough weight by the fall breeding season time, I wouldn't see a problem with introducing him. In fact, if your female is a first time breeder, it would be an ideal time so she will only lay a few clutches before the winter cool down.

You can try introducing them in the winter time, but for the most part in my experience, they decide when they're ready to produce. So they might hold off until Spring anyways.

One of the reasons why I love this hobby is there is always something to learn, and you asking questions is the best way to do it :D

Hope this helps!
