Aloha from Hawaii

Aloha, Gecko Lovers!

I live in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii, in our "Gecko Hale". I have no pet (captive) geckos, but I have lots of geckos that live in our house, on our lanai, and in our yard.

My favorite is the Mourning Gecko (Lepidodactylus lugubris), which is the closest thing to native. They are clearly the most intelligent, but are preyed upon by both the larger gecko species.

We also have House Geckos (Hemidactylus frenatus), which we really enjoy for their chatter and their gay abandon when mating. We've had them fall from the ceiling onto us in their excitement. :blushing:

And we also have a recent alien import, the Gold Dust Day Gecko (Phelsuma laticauda). They have some very endearing qualities and one of my very favorite little guys was a gold dust named Boxy. But in general I am not fond of their aggressive behavior towards the house and mourning geckos, not to mention their unsavory appetite for baby geckos of all kinds. And the males are always picking fights!

I have a small colony of mourning geckos who took over my supply basket on the table next to my computer desk, as well as the orchid pots (they have holes in the sides which make very nice gecko hideys).

We put out water and papaya for all the geckos, and feed them meal worms every day or so. And during baby season, we rush to capture the babies before the "greenies" do! :(

Even though I obviously cannot control their diet nor their environment, we do see problems in some of them and I think your experiences can give us insight in how to help them. :)

Traveled to all the Hawaiian Islands years ago...and I remember Kona had one of the best beaches I have ever been to.

Mahalo, Palor!

Hey! We also have green anoles running wild all over the place! They don't often come inside the house, tho.

That was probably Hapuna, a very popular beach. ;)

Haven't heard of a Super Hypo Tangerine Carrot Tail Gecko before. Have a photo? ;)

It was a lot of fun. Some of the natives to the area were there feeding huge fish with frozen peas! And I almost ran head on into a sea turtle when I was swimming! Good times!!
Here is a picture of my baby...

Ooooh, very pretty! What a lovely color!

I envy all you folks who can have pet geckos. I love having all our wild geckos running around, but very few of them care to be held -- although quite a few will come into your hand for a meal worm. ;)

Mahalo!! ^_^

It took a while to get this one use to me enough to handle. Still a bit skiddish but has gotten better. Only problem now is that he/she tends to poop on my shirt... >.<
