hello everyone,

I have eggs that are molding in my incubator. i am using vermiculite as a substrate with a dimple in the center to hold the egg in place. the egg is no deeper than half of it in the sustrate. I use the 1:1 ratio no holes in the container so i let it air once a week and then close them up. the container i use is teh glad fruit cup size i think they are 3 oz total area. there is about 1/2 an inch from the top of the substrate to the bottom of the lid. the temps are at 81 degrees. Can anyone give an idea to why they are molding? oh btw there is no moisture on the container above the substrate.

Thanks

Not enough airflow and too much moisture are the two main things that'll cause mold (other than the eggs not being fertile). I'd make a fresh cup with a 1:0.8 ratio and poke a couple of little holes in the lid for airflow and then transfer the eggs into the new container. If there's mold actually on the eggs, you can take a tissue and GENTLY try to wipe the mold off.

I've heard of people using athletes foot powder, but i have never done this myself, have other people used this method of controlling mould on eggs?

as far as i can tell the eggs are fertile i do know i have some that are not and thats ok i understand the mold but i keep them until they are gone totally cause you never know. All of my eggs get marked before i take them out of the lay box but that is a good point to make for those that dont know.
