Hawaiian P. guimbeaui

Hello all,

I was wondering what is needed to bring P. guimbeaui from Hawaii? I know some people on these forms have WC's from Hawaii. Are CITES permits required? Who can I get in contact with? I'm on West-Cost Canada, so the "shipping" wouldn't be too long. Most importantly, is this even possible ?

Thanks,
Adam

Try checking with the local wildlife service at whichever airport/port you would most likely be receiving the animal.

Thanks for the information. I'll get right on that. Who can I contact to collect them? Anyone reputable?

Thanks,
Adam

Why collecting wc, even if they are from Hawaii? Maybe some day gumbeaui will only survive on Hawaii. Is there no captive breed available in the U.S.?

I believe there is a $15 permit that you can take 1 individual per person. I am from hawaii and was looking to bring local phelsuma species to the states, but found out you're limited to one per person, which would make no sense for me at all. You would also have to check out arrival state laws

My dad is actually going to Hawaii next week and i was thinking maybe he could get a guimbeaui and send one here. Since its only one per person i wouldnt mind that. Do they have them at pet stores or would he have to go out in the jungle and catch one? Also live in California, can anyone point me in the direction of where any info is on importing one of these guys here with all the proper paper work and what not of course

I doubt they'd be available in pet stores. I know in the case of P. Grandis it's illegal to keep a gecko at all and anyone who spots one is supposed to contact some sort of state pest control agency. From the (little) research I've done, Hawaii's division of wildlife considers day geckos in general to be invasive pests (which they kind of are there).

Oh I agree its stupid ... far too much money for something that is a "pest" in parts of the states.

When you say normal hobbyist do mean inexperienced. In my opinion phelsuma should only be in the hands of people trying to breed them. But to answer your question which I think you meant hobbyist with no dam money.I rarely sell my animals trades are always preferred or better yet breeding loans so yes they are available to the frugal phelsuma hobbyist just not the dumb ones.

haha yes i meant hobbyists with no money. But that is cool to know they are out there, at some point in the future i would love to try some of these out. I would like to add a few years experience first with the phelsuma i currently have and am going to get soon

well in Canada, the cost of importing such rare species is rather high. so the breeders tend to forget such noble attempts at bettering the hobby.
