feeding CGD how often?

another question for everyone, hope you don't mind another new thread from me.

in terms of the CGD, i've been reading different things about feeding frequency and i think i'm a little bit confused. i have checked the FAQ section of this forum, online, i have a crested gecko book, and i guess the most consistent thing i've read is feeding them once every 2-3 days. but this is where i become confused. am i supposed to, for example, put the food in the tank in the evening and take it out in the morning without refilling the food dish for 2-3 days (so there will be nothing for him to eat at for that time) OR am i supposed to put the food in the tank one evening, leave it for 2-3 days, and then put a fresh serving in after that time has passed?

i hope my question is clear, thanks for your help in advance!

Most people feed every other night; a few do feed every third night. To me it all depends on the gecko's preference. Ours like the CGD fresh and will eat everything offered on the first night, so we feed ours every other night. Some geckos prefer to eat it when it is a day or 2 old, therefore keeping the CGD in the enclosure for 2-3 nights.

Since your crestie is a baby, I'd offer it CGD every other night. When it is a sub-adult or adult, then you can change to every 2-3 nights or keep at the every other night.

thanks, thats what i'll do. should i actually take it out of the tank the next morning, or leave it in for the full day after? and then replace it with fresh food every 2nd night? or actually only provide food every 2nd night, completely removing it from the tank the following morning?

If you get mold, or fruitflies, you can take it out in the morning, stick it in the fridge, then put it back at night. Completely up to you.

My big guy eats CGD every night @ the equivalent of about ½(or just over) a teaspoon for 2 nights worth.

Mine, too have different preferences, I know 3 of mine eat it all within half hour of being, some others will start it that night, and the rest start/finish it on the second night. I usually take it out on the next morning/midday.

It's down to the gecko, but I feed CGD about twice a week (three with the babies) as they also get offered live once a week. (My week is usually 8/9 days, I know that sounds confusing!!)

I leave mine in the enclosure and remove it only when putting in fresh. You usually don't have to worry about fruit flies or mold in the winter time, it is mainly in the summer....but it also depends on where you live and what your weather is like. I have never had any fruit flies or mold yet -fingers crossed- that I never do.

Me too, leave it in for two to three days.

I have found a little mould a couple of times, but it's usually been in the summer, hot, and after I've sprayed them the second night (the mould appeared the folowing morning) so now I take them out first thing in the morning. It's just a case of keeping check of it. I've never had issues though

i live in canada and its bitter cold here right now so i dont think mould or fruit flies should be a problem, so i should be able to leave it in the tank for a couple nights at least.

i talked to a breeder about this. they said 2-3 nights. they also told me that if you leave it in when misting that it can become as hard as a rock. also, they say not to leave crickets loose in the tank because they will bite the geckos at night.

I'm still trying to get my gecko on a regular schedule, this is kind of new to me. But... I thought that because most people fed their crested geckos CGD, it was okay to leave a couple crickets in overnight because they would eat the CGD and not bother the gecko. Am I wrong?


Oh, and I put out fresh paste every other night. I make either 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon of powder with two parts water. Sometimes it's all gone after two nights, sometimes it looks like he hasn't touched it. I want to give him the option of eating a lot because he doesn't look as pudged up as he should be. Hopefully these new crickets will get him there.
