So my b-day is coming up and I am going to be "hinting" to my wife that I would like to pick up a crested. There are a couple of breeders in town that are offering 1-2 month olds but before I actually look at picking one up what should I know.
I know that they are arboreal so they need a tall tank instead of a wide tank with plenty of plant (fake or real) to climb and jump on. Substrate of coco fiber, temperature of around 75-85, misted at least once a day, usually at night. Food is Crested Gecko Diet powder mixed in with non-citrus fruit and the odd cricket maybe once a week.
We have a leopard gecko, and I have an idea of what to look for if I was going to pick another one up, but what about a crested. What should I look for when picking one out (regardless of colouring). What kind of signs should I be looking for to indicate poor health, or improper handling?
I was at one of the pet shops last weekend and I felt sooo bad for the poor geckos there. The crested are in small (less than 5 gal) tanks with a small plastic plant about 6 inches high and wood shavings on the bottom (looked like stuff from a hamster tank). The leopard geckos were in something slightly bigger but there were 3 in the tank on sand substrate and they looked so thin. Not pencil tail, but still thin none the less.
