Im struggling to classify this Tokay Morph...

He is currently settling in but when he arrived he was a nice bright blue, but after a couple of weeks he is still has this dark colouration. I dont want to start handling him yet while he is getting used to his new home but I think the dark colouring is his unstressed colours and the bright blue is his stressed colours.

Any idea's? I have seen Tokay's in europe advertised as "melanistic" they seemed bright blue, a lot like mine.

You need to post a picture of it when it's not dark to be able to tell for certain. "Melanistic" refers to increased melanin (black pigment). But, if it doesn't stay black/gray all the time, then it's not really melanistic.

The problem is that some look nothing like the other. Not all granites look the same. Maybe I'm getting the morph that I'm thinking of in my head wrong. Not totally impossible. But Just like not all Calicos, powders, olives, and pieds look exactly alike. So comparing one to another cant really be exact. For some it's easier than other morphs but..... None look exactly alike. Buy I agree I'd like to see pics of it lightened.

I disagree about this. This is not granite because it is too dark to be granite. And I have been looking at other granites Tokay, all appear to be light..

Tom, have you tried to contact Kevin from NERD (New England Reptile Distributors)? He might help you out? Hope this will help you

The fact of the matter is that terms like "granite", "calico", "powder blue", etc are all just names that mean very little. It's not like they're scientific terms. Again, as long as it's dark like that, you can't tell what it really is anyway. We'll need a picture of the animal when it's fired up to tell anything at all.

It's dark now yes. But that's not the true coloring. My powders go black when stressed, or in the morning when theyre warming up. But they aren't melanistic. Ethan is dead on. To tell you what it actually is, we need a pic when it's lightened.

Sorry for the late reply people. been very busy! I've only seen its lighter colour once and that was when I first opened the bag. It has stayed dark the whole time since and it seems very settled. it's feeding/pooing and no longer runs away at the sight of me. This is leading me to believe that its dark colouring is its unstressed colours but I may be wrong. Best way to find out is to catch it and see. Either way, like you said, it isnt melanistic. I just found it stranged that i've seen very similar gecko's labelled and sold as melanistic. Ill try and get pics up as soon as its convenient and as always. thanks for your imput =]

I have the same morph tokay, he is black and on other days he turns a bright teal. I don't know how this happens but hes a happy healthy tokay.

Do you have any pictures for comparison?

At the moment no. I'll have to take a new one when he comes out of hiding. Hes a weirdo.

He will turn solid black, and then will have orange spots while completely black and then he'll be completely teal with red.

He cant make up his mind.
