Hatchling choked to death on vermiculite!! :(

I'm just sick over what happened last night... one of my crestie eggs hatched about 2 weeks earlier than I was expecting it to, and when I checked in the egg container, I saw a new hatchling sitting there but his mouth was full of vermiculite! I took him out and tried to clean him off with some water, but when I put him in his new cage, he started running around trying to 'cough up' the vermiculite he had swallowed. He seemed to be choking to death on it! I took an eye dropper and got it into his mouth and I was able to suction out a huge chunk of vermiculite... but I guess I must not have gotten it all because he gasped a few more times and then went limp in my hand :(
I tried for the next 10-15 minutes to resuscitate him without success... he had evidently choked to death:cry:

I don't know if this is a common occurrence or if there is something I should do to prevent this from happening again. The other egg has not hatched yet, but just to be safe, I took it out of the vermiculite and placed in in some moist paper towels inside the cage where I am planning to raise the hatchling. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
