"Gecko database"

Im not sure if this exists or something but I believe it is a good idea. We need some kind of Gecko database for breeders and keeps to monitor how many of each species is in captivity and to just account for all the animals.

Something like a new section on Geckos unlimted. You click like "Gecko database" for instance and it could list every genus of Gekkonidae. Then you could select a genus, "Phelsuma" for instance and then scroll throw the species till you find the one you own. If I were registering my rosagularis you could say, I would click rosagularis. A list of other keepers would appear. I could then proceed to give information in a post with my name, a list of how many I currently own of each sex, an e-mail to contact me by, county you live in, and possibly a picture of the animal.

I think something like this could be very successful if it was done correctly. This would give the WHOLE gecko community the privilege of having everything laid out for us. We already have a place to go to get information and have our questions answered, but it lacks the ability to find people. This would be strictly to account for specimens in captivity and for people to look directly for other keeps for inquiries on that particular species.

This is kinda like the "Phelsuma keepers" thread but more in depths. There are so many geckos collector out there and no one has a way to possibly locate them all. Keeping tabs on the species as in there numbers is a great way to also know what species people should focus on breeding. Rare geckos species would benefit so much by this because everyone would know everyone!

I can think of so many species I sit and wonder about how many people own them, were are they located, and whos doing what. Like how many Matoatoa brevipes, Ebenavia inunguis, Phelsuma inexpectata, Phelsuma serraticauda, Phelsuma pronki, paroedura masobe, paroedura gracilis, Uroplatus giganteus etc. etc. etc. are left in the captivity. (Just a few of my favorites). I mean does anyone else agree with my idea?

This seems like a really great idea!

I think it would be really cool if you had it set up so that [using your example as a template] once you click rosagularis a list of countries comes up, then you pick a country and a list of breeders/keepers in that country comes up with their contact info and how many of each sex they have. It just seems like that one extra filter would make it a lot easier [at least for someone like me lol] to find what they're looking for. Just a thought. :)

It just seems like a lot of work for the people who maintain the forum, there are a lot of species lol. But I'm also really horrible when it comes to technology so Idk how much work this would actually require, I am just assuming getting it started would be a bit time consuming? Still a wonderful idea. ^__^

It's a fine idea, but it would be a simply HUGE task. It would be task enough just putting together a database of all known species. But then to try to add breeders info would be nearly impossible. Many people who keep/breed rare herps don't WANT people to know that they have them. So just getting them to participate would make it impossible. Also, for someone that has say 20 crested geckos, to try and update their info every time they have offspring or sell the offspring to someone else, etc is a ton of work. There have been other similar projects with single species (corn snake registry, cat gecko registry, etc). I've never seen it become long term viable though. Again, just too much work. I'd like to just have a data base of most gecko species w/ a picture or two of each and a little info. But even that is a monumental task.

I think iHerp has something like that. It isn't gecko specific, but they have something like it. I think It would be a great idea, but like Ethan said, it would take a ton of effort to do.
