Tokay import localities

I'm hoping that folks who have been in the tokay hobby longer than I can clear up a question for me. I've recently heard people lament the low quality of Indonesian geckos in terms of color and size. In the instances I've heard, they usually compare them (unfavorably) to older imports from Malaysia. So my questions:

1) Is there indeed a major difference between the tokays we get now vs. historically, or is this just nostalgia?

2) Is anybody still working with geckos descended from that older stock, if it is so superior?

3) Are any other parts of the tokay's range opening up for export that might offer similar variation?

Thanks in advance for satisfying my curiosity.

I believe there are differences in quality, but not all Tokay from Indonesia have lower quality than malaysia.Tokay quality obtained from Indonesia depending on the areas where the Tokay comes.mostly Tokay is exported from the islands of Java.partly Tokay from Java region has a lower quality, probably due to limited feed Tokay in its habitat some areas in Java.

The answer is yes, there are a lot of differences between locales. Many of what we are currently calling "morphs" may simply be locale specific differences and/or even different subspecies. The problem here is that over the years, much like with leopard geckos, nobody has bothered to keep these locales separated from each other and now, they are a big conglomeration. Importers don't tend to care about such things, especially when you're talking about geckos that cost like $5 each. I have some that are certainly that big bulky, blue and orange, classic looking tokay. And I could guess where they came from...but in all truth, unless you actually collected them yourself, you'll never know 100% for sure. Pretty much the best you can do these days is simply find someone that's breeding from stock that has the visual appearance of the traits that you like.

hai 155,
i think what u mean is about the tokay received from which supplier.
in terms of genetic, i think they have no problem at all which we cant tell which localities was weaker. i breed Jawa island and Malaysia tokay and cross breed them which dont see any sign of weakness at the moment. (as far as i know they are not subspecies, unless for Bangladesh tokay)

i kind of agree wit danniel, it's the matter of the supplier, the way they manage their animals that determined the quality of animals u received.

if we talk about their genetics, the quality i mentioned earlier would be in different definition which had been explained by RR. so far, as i know only two person in indonesia breed tokay morphs. as it comes to F2, well, im not so sure.
