Geck-oh

New member
I have had a leopard gecko, which I am fairly certain is a female for a long time now. Today at the petstore I saw an adorable little baby gecko and bought it. I put it in the terarium with Sobe, and Sobe (the elder gecko) instantly acted odd. At first, just following around and lickin, then some tail wagging, and finally a bite. I took the baby out of the cage for now, but I dont have another one, its in a temporary plastic one. What can I do to get these geckos to get along. I understand the territorial aspect, I should have thought of that. I want to try to put them together in the bathtub, then clean and rearrange the cage. Will this work? Is there anything I can do to prevent them from fighting?

Hi,

I am sure you have now realized you have made several huge mistakes. It's important to do your research before buying a reptile.

1)Most important you did not quarantine the new gecko putting them both at risk of spreading parasites which can lead to their death.

2) Never house geckos together unless they are of equal size.

3) Even if 2 girls were housed together there is no guarantee they will get along.

Now you have a bitten, stressed out baby gecko whose sex is unknown in a plastic container with no hides a or heat? No these 2 geckos cannot be housed together for the reasons mentioned above. You will have to visit the pet store tomorrow and buy a whole new tank and furniture for the smaller gecko. Please read over the caresheet I have provided in the link.

I have two that I've wanted to house together for convenience sake since I got the second one. My Kalahari is a bully. She followed Sahara around and kept licking her and standing over her. Sahara just laid ther looking unimpressed at the intimidation.
I take them out for supervised visits now and then and the get on well outside of the tank (I have my boyfriend for back up incase they decide to run opposite directions on me ;) ) I think that they just don't like being in an enclosed space together. You could try letting them see each other outside of the tank but they probably won't ever like being in an enclosed space together. That's my experience anyways.

Large gecko + baby gecko in the same tank means the small baby gecko will look like food to the larger gecko. You are lucky you separated them early, it could've gotten very ugly. You never, ever, want to place two geckos of different size and unknown sex in the same tank. So for now the best thing you can do is to prepare a different tank for the baby gecko. No if's or but's about it, you can not put them together.

Cricket4u answered perfectly, please do read up about leopard gecko husbandry & care.
