Deformed hatchling

After 7 healthy hatchlings, a sick little girl hatched today. There is something wrong with her back. :( Her clutch mate hatched at the same time and she's fine.

She can walk, and she doesn't appear to have any pain. Apart from her back, she seems completely normal. But her back looks so bad.

It's just the weirdest thing...
Anyone seen anything like this before?

I just hope she survives.

When she lies on her stomach:

Standing up, her back looks like this:

And then it's this:

I know their legs and jaws get like that because of calcium deficiency but I don't see how that would be the case. I'd take her to the vet and see what they say. I hope it's not paining her.

She deserves a chanse, like I said, she moves around and behaves like a normal baby. Her clutch mate walked over her back, and she didn't react, so I don't think she's in any pain.

The pics on top was taken right after she hatched. She looks a bit better now, we are wondering if she's been curled up the wrong way inside the egg.

Thanks for the reply samantha. All my geckos have pure calcium in their tank all the time. I will definitely call a vet tomorrow (it's nighttime in norway).

She does look alot better. It's really great to see. Maybe she was just crumpled in her egg. I'd still get a vet check when you can just in case :)

She's doing well. Her back looks even better now, so I think she will be ok. But I'm not sure though, she hasn't started to eat yet. Time will tell I guess.

The vet said it could be a crooked spine, or that she's been curled up the wrong way inside the egg. Either way, it's something that she can live with, and based on observations it's not likely that she's in any pain :)

Well me personally Im so glad that you didnt have her "put down" as someone suggested and you gave her a chance.
We should always give some time when something doesnt look just perfect. Well unless it has 8 legs and three heads. But we should never be to quick to kill. Just my .2 cents.

Thanks. I think she'll be ok too.

I totally agree with you, if there's a possibility the animal deserves a chance. :)
When I saw her at first, I was sure she was going to die in a shot matter of time, but in just a couple of hours her back was more straight, and she looked so much better.

I will keep you posted :)

Nop

I can only hope that this thread can/will save the next baby that's not born perfect.
She looks wonderful, healthy and spoiled!
