The Down Side of the Hobby

So last weekend I experienced my first Mossy loss. Jinx, my adult female, had been trying to recover from a calcium crash since March. She seemed to be getting stronger and last week I managed to get her to keep down a couple crickets. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, the crash got the best of her and she passed away last Friday.

I realize that Uroplatus are a fragile species, I knew this going into them, but it still doesn't prepare you for the losses. I have to believe that she had always been weak as the fellow I got her from had had to nurse her back to health as well last year. We both thought she was in the clear and thats why I bought her. I guess some are just predestined.

Its been a hard loss for me, I can't explain it, but these little guys just really get into my heart. I won't quit mossies cause there are still the rewards, so at best I will take this as a learning situation, learn from it.

Sorry for your loss. Necropsy by any chance? It would be so helpful to know if her kidneys were damaged.

Ann, I'm sorry to hear about poor jinxy! :( Keep that chin up! You know how to get ahold of me if you need any telekinetic hugs! :)

Cricket I thought about getting a necropsy done but I have already put her in her resting place. I was just so upset when I found her :(

I was hoping that she'd be ok, so sorry to hear she didn't make it. I've lost 3 Sikorae in the last 12 months, but I will say I've learned a lot more about the species each time. Even though we have set-backs, good can come through our experiences learned. Hugs!

Its hard and I feel for you. It's hard when you loose a gecko. Sometimes to the point of making you question yourself in this hobby and if you are doing something wrong. However, you do learn from your mistakes and go on. The animals need you too.

Sorry to hear that she didn't pull through. It is, unfortunately, part of keeping geckos.
I have in the past given a calcium lactate solution via a syringe to breeding females, and it seems to have been the mid-season boost that they needed. I also absolutely always have calcium dishes in with breeding females. If you don't, then I would highly recommend doing so. I have seen at least 3 or 4 different Uroplatus species self-dosing from calcium bowls.
