Anyone seen the add for the blue grandis coming to Europe? in the region of 900 euros each( well I assume each).I wonder if there will be many takers at that price?

Hi Colin,
Could you post some details of who will be selling these (pm of you prefer). They will be too expensive for me but nice to see some of the higher end grandis this side of the atlantic

I saw the advert you were referring to, they look great! I'm also a little concerned that certain phelsuma may become the next 'designer reptile' hopefully not the case. I have always mixed my higher red grandis to 'normal' animals. It would be a shame to create another group of animals which are artificially enhanced for a specific trait. My experience is that this can easily be done through selective incubation temps in the same way that Leo's are bred however I really would like to see grandis and all other phelsuma kept as 'natural' as possible.

I do like the look of some of the grandis on the site the original pic came from but feel that this could be a step too far in terms of selective breeding for this species.

What do others think?

I think that the breeder comes on here ;-)

Morphs are not really my thing ,does it matter though?

I dont think so because there are far more people in the hobby due to morphs in Leopard Geckos and others. Some people like them but a lot of them look like the emperors new clothes to me and seem a reason to charge a vast amount of money for each new one. Each to their own.

Some really good points Colin, they usually aren't my thing as there is so much beauty in the natural reptile world. I will say there are one or two royal python morphs out there which completely blow me away.

Back to you original I'm sure that if these do make it to Europe there will be plenty of takers if not just for the novelty then I'm sure one or two people will see them as 'an investment'

Thanks Jon the thread you linked is very interesting, there's no doubt that you have a large gene pool to work with and this will undoubtedly make things easier in terms of ensuring that you are able to maintain stock which is genetically diverse whilst still breeding for desirable traits, it's a shame that there aren't many others which have this luxury (if any?).

Not exactly related but I thought I would throw it out there but do you feel it's possible to select for brighter colours or an increased amount of red in the same way as you can via manipulation of incubation temps in leopard geckos? I ask not because I personally want to persue it but because it could make it easier to improve morphs of this species while preventing people from deliberately narrowing their limited gene pools

Greetings Ben.

Interestingly enough, a few researchers in the scientific community have taken an interest in the incubation temperature verse color topic and have performed good scientific studies. These studies have been published in peer reviewed scientific journals. Check out these authors (Haung, Crews, and Viets) and their papers if you can. They describe the effect of incubation temperature on color in leopard geckos.

After studying their work I have done some trials with incubation temperatures and found that it does not play a role in color with Phelsuma grandis.

By the way, anyone with the screen name “Phelsumaman” is very cool in my book. I hope we get to meet to talk geckos at some point. Let me know if you ever find yourself in South Florida and I will give you a tour of my place.

If you want to check out the recent article in REPTILES Magazine about Phelsuma grandis it is now free online at: The Insider

All the best and stay in touch, Jon

Thanks Jon, could you post the full citations of these papers if you have them? I should be able to get hold of them but it will be much easier if I have all the details.

Thanks for the compliment :) I'm actually from Miami so have lots of family in your part of the world, don't be surprised if I take you up on your offer sometime!
