How much UVB is needed?

I personally don't use uvb on my nocturnal geckos. But, if you're going to use it, I would suggest a fairly low level one. They certainly don't need huge amounts of it like diurnal herps do. As for how many hours of light, I try to keep mine on a fairy normal (natural) light cycle.

I have 1 of 2 tokays in a large 90 gallon old Oceanic Lizard Lounge. The tank is fully planted, gecko has lived in it since 2003. The tank is illuminated with 3 four-foot fluorescent fixtures. 1 fixture is the matching hood for tank and 2 are shop lights. There are a total of 5 bulbs on the tank, 2 T8 GE Daylight (6500K), an older T12 GE Daylight, a T12 GE plant and aquarium bulb, and a ReptiSun 10.0. I've not noticed any benefits of the uv for the gecko, but he does "bask" in the morning and again late afternoon. The only visual benefit I see is that my creeping fig, string of hearts, and fire flash plant (Chlorophytum sp.) are going nuts. I actually have the fire flash spreading in the tank.

Lights are on at 7:30am and off at 8. If I had a female for him I'd actually be cycling the tank, lowering temps and increasing my mistings. In years past that has triggered pre-breeding with eggs showing up around December. The gecko in this tank is actually the result of this cycling, dating back to March 1999.

Yeah, 2.0 or 2.5 uvb max.

I don't really cycle the lighting time much from 12 on/12 off for Tokay since these all come from the Equator and the real seasonal change their is the rain cycle.

We're in the dry season right now in Indonesia until about January. So slightly cooler and much dryer conditions will trigger the resting period. Fire up the heat and misters hard again just after New Years and the breeding season kicks into super high gear until almost mid August for most Tokay.

Good luck and enjoy!
