chewie substrate

If using properly, it would be fine, but as a pure substrate? No. It is used as a drainage material if I am reading correctly. Also, I do not utilize leaves in my Chewie tanks. Tons of cork bark pieces, but no leaves. For my substrate, I use sphagnum moss mixed with plantation soil bricks, small amount of sand and wood shavings (not the bark kind).

Well I went ahead and just went with the NEHERP for the drainage (its made from recycled glass) and the NEHERP soil mix with oak leaves for the substrate. I should be getting that order along with plants and a whole lot of other stuff from NEHERP in the next week. Should I add a clay mix to my substrate for the plants?

On another note, buddy called and gave me 6 cases of GE silicone I, and 2 cases of Great Stuff in the blue can for free. So now I am deciding on rebuilding a tank or two. just sucks the silicone is clear, never used clear before for the reason of not being able to see where its applied and sucks at covering up missed spots. but it was free so that is a big bonus.

That is actually one of the things I am worried about, the size of a Chewie will be pretty tough on most plants, but the ones I have picked out are strong, I will give them a go and see what happens. Due this issue alone I have thought of getting a crested, but I just like chewie's temperament and color far more. I want the tank to be pleasing to the eye as well though so I will try out the planted idea.

I am going to try a test run with the concrete mix and see if I cant smooth it out with a wet paintbrush or something while its curing to give it a semi smooth texture. Not sure how well this is going to work.
