Need shopping tips

I am in the process of setting up two terrariums for my new baby geckos. Currently they are in critter keepers settling in while I get their digs set up. Does anybody have any favorite sites to get accessories such as climbling sticks, plants, and hides? My local big box store has lots of products, but it seems that the prices are a bit high so I am looking for online sources to do my shopping. I love a bargain and am hoping my gecko loving friends can steer me the right direction.

I have two new cresties that I am over the moon in love with. I was just introduced to them at a local reptile show and was immediately hooked. I bought one little one there and just got the second at the big box store in town. They are beautiful, healthy, cricket hunting little darlings. The first one I named Noumea and the second one is a brick red color, so its name is Tabasco. I can already tell how addictive they are.

I appreciate any suggestions on my shopping question and have enjoyed perusing the forum!

Congrats on your new geckos, sounds like you've got bitten by the bug pretty good.

A good place for crested gecko supplies is Pangea. Pangea Reptile Supplies Home Page Matt is always running some sort of special either on products or shipping.

I like to keep things cheap as well, so we usually get fake plants at Michael's (bleach them first, rinse thoroughly) and collect up driftwood that we sanitize before using. Since cresteds are arboreal, they don't really need a hide. I do find that my young geckos I keep in bins will use a paper towel roll, so I'll do that for them. In general though, enough fake (or real) plants should do the trick.

I'm glad to hear they are eating already, and I'm curious if you are also feeding them some sort of crested gecko diet. They do the best on a diet of cgd and live foods. Matt sells different sizes of diet, and with only two geckos it'll last you a long time.

I hope that helps. If you have any other questions, definitely let us know. :)

Hey Krystal.....we may have spoken before on another gecko forum. Thank you so much for your reply. I am feeding CGD twice a week and then crickets on Friday. At this size, it is really difficult to tell if Noumea (Tabasco only got here yesterday, so I have not offered him/her the CGD yet) is eating the diet. I have been dabbing my finger in the diet and touching Noumea's lips and he will lick it off my finger. So I know at least he is eating some. And like I said, man do they go after the crickets. I am dusting them with a calcium powder and since I am currently and be-grudgingly housing more crickets than I intended, they are fed like kings, crushed dog food, fruits, and veggies. They are fat and happy, for a while, hee hee! Tabasco hunted like a real pro. I did not expect him to eat since he had just been moved and was likely stressed to the max, but he hung upside down from his plant and snagged crickets from above. It was VERY impressive. They are both readily eating 4 crickets at a time. I dont want to give them more than that. I just cant imagine gorging themselves is a good thing. I did order a little feeder rock thing from Pangea so I will re-visit his site to check on some other accessories. I got a tree stump/mossy thing for the hidey spot in the bottom and then his bushy leafy thing that sticks to the side up high. I want to get something stick like for up high, too. I like your idea about Michaels. I had not thought about that. Thanks a bunch for the suggestions!

I get almost all of my branches from outdoors, which I then sanitize as Krystal had suggested. Occasionally I will buy bamboo, but I haven't gotten any in a while. That I get from reptile specialty people online (various ones, there are a few people on here who sell it also). When I bought fake vines, it was either used herp stuff, or from walmart/michaels/joann fabric. Now I either use the stuff I already have, or go the natural route (plants from various big box stores, nurseries, stuff I have around the house). I make sure everything has been cleaned before I use it, plants included. To echo Krystal again, they don't really need hides on the ground, but they do enjoy cork bark tubes and bamboo that has been cut for easy entry/ext (either in half length-wise, or with holes cut into it). I will either find mine sleeping in their cork tubes that have been placed vertically, or in their plants. The only times I have found mine sleeping on the floor were when the tanks got a bit drier in the winter.
Oh, and congrats on the new little ones!! I hope they keep doing well for you :)

it's hard to get a gauge on your experience: are these your first cresteds or have you had them in the past? i only ask because i don't want to tell you things that you already know. many people like to just leave their little guys in the critter keepers until they're a certain size: the geckos feel more secure in a small, thickly vegetated space and they will have an easier time finding food. i have personally found this to be true, but not everyone does this and they often sound like they do just fine. i kept my newest in a large keeper for about a month, moved him to a larger enclosure and he stopped eating. i moved him back to the smaller, and he went right back to eating again. now that he's larger, he's doing just fine in a larger set-up. i love setting up nice big and interesting vivs too, but my advice would be to leave them in the keepers until they've completely outgrown them then try the larger, nicer enclosures. can we get some pics of your vivs and beasts?

my actual experience is nil. I bought my first gecko at a reptile show from a very reputable breeder, it turns out, after falling in love with holding one the first time. I came home, cried, went back and got one. I let the breeder help me get set up with the keeper, plant, food, crickets and instructions on temp, humidity, feeding schedule and off we went. I spent every spare waking hour, and still do, scouring the Internet and forums and learning and re-learning and un-learning so I can be the best gecko momma ever. I got another one locally at Petsmart because one just isnt enough. I have read extensively that they should stay in the critter keeper for a while to keep them from being unable to find food, etc. Frankly, I hate the critter keeper. Every time I try to put him back into it, its like trying to get a cat into a car carrier. He just WONT go. He runs up my arm, jumps onto the lid, anything he can try to keep from going in. I wanted something easier and more attractive and the Exoterra terrarium in the size i wanted was on sale. I got it and set it up, totally prepared to go back to the critter keeper at the first sign of going off his food or being stressed. So far, he is totally owning his environment. He sleeps where he loves in his hanging plant, comes out at night and peruses the floor and when i put his crickets in on Friday, he wasted NO time hunting them all down and scarfing them up, even the one who tried to evade him by going up high in the plants. Noumea just went up there and got him. I was impressed. He gets CGD twice weekly but it is hard to tell if he is eating it and how much. when i hold him in the evenings, I offer him some on my finger and he will lick it off, so i know he is getting some. i just ordered a magnetic ledge feeder so he can have food in two places to choose from. Tabasco now inhabits the critter keeper and I will likely leave him in there a bit longer, as he seems very very young to me. Flighty, tiny, but aggressive with crickets. he has settled down considerably since the first day. i have yet to offer him the diet since Friday was cricket day and Monday will be CGD day. They keep right on their schedule. The sleep all day, I turn the lights off at dark and they come out of hiding for their gecko activities. I mist them, handle them a little, and then leave them be to feel safe and secure in the dark. I think I am doing a good job, and I understand that there are many many schools of thought on all matters. I am always always up for learning something new. I have never posted pics on this forum, so I will give it a try. It may take a minute or a month, depending on the process and my brain. I also just ordered some more plants to give even more cover and I added a vinyl background instead of the foam thing that came in it, as i read geckos can get behind it and perish. I couldnt risk it. I really think they are doing great. I have no children to harrass them. My house is quiet and peaceful and operates for the health and comfort of all my critters, two rescue dogs, Sparkle and Memphis, a 17 year old blue fronted Amazon parrot I had raised, Rio, and now my two beloved little geckos, Noumea and Tabasco. I gut load my crickets with a healthy diet of fruits, veg, and dog food, and dust them with calcium and vitamin D3 as i was instructed by another gecko lover. I will work on pics of the critters and their set up. Keep in mind, the terrium is a work in progress and I dont have as much in it as I plan to have, but budget only allows so much at one time. I have some other stuff on the way to give even more cover and security. I hope I shed some light on what I have, what I know, what I am trying to acheive, and maybe even some areas where I could use some advice. I love forums for things like this. Such a valuable resource! Thanks in advance for your suggestions and guidance. Hopefully, pictures to follow.

well if they eat well, then no worries. i agree that the glass cages look much nicer, but upgrading as they grow can be cost prohibitive sometimes. if it works for you and them though, then it's worth it. if i may make one suggestion...they might appreciate more foliage in the exo-terra, though i think what you have in there is pretty nice looking. maybe another vine on the ground so they don't feel so exposed as they go for the cgd or another one on one of the other walls. i've always read/been told that the more cover for these guys when they're this little, the better. that hollow stump is really cool, btw.
awesome looking geckos.

I loved the stump thing when I bought it but am having second thoughts about it, as I wonder if he will ever go in it on the ground since they like to be up high. I just placed an order for some more hanging plants and another one to go down below too. I was not sure how much stuff I would need to fill it, so I went a little light until I saw how it came together and now I am filling in the gap, so to speak. The terrarium is the 12x12x18. Do you think this is going to be too small for a single adult gecko? I was thinking this would be the one that he would stay in indefinitely. I am hopeful that I can position the magnetic feeder ledge somewhat underneath the hanging vines to give some cover while he eats. I want it to look nice, but like I said, everything is a work in progress. So far, they both seem calm and comfortable and I will watch them closely to make sure they continue to eat well. I so appreciate your taking a look at my set up and giving me some pointers. Sounds like we are on the same page about what it needs.

Very nice geckos! I have noticed that my hatchlings hate the kk's also... I think they are just too small, despite the general consensus that they are ideal for hatchlings. I have never had any hatchling eager to get back into the kk, except when they the tiniest of little ones (under 2g).
As for the exo terra, a 12x12x18 will be too tight of a fit for an adult crested. I generally move them out of that size by the time they reach 20g... They like to move about, and a 12x12x18 just does not provide enough space for a full-grown gecko. If you really like the look of the exo's, keep an eye out on CL and you would be able to find a used larger one for cheaper... I got a number of my 18x18x24 off there and never paid more than $65 for one that big. The 12x12x18's I have not paid more than $30 for... You have time to look, as it's hit-or-miss. You just have to patiently search for a while. Both internet sites and pet stores have occasional sales on them. ZooMeds tend to be cheaper than the Exo Terra's, so that might also be something to look into. If you frequent your local big box store, you can find sales on various sizes that are particular to that store. I have found a number of glass terrariums on sale at one particular PetSmart because they did not sell well there. Once the stock sits on their shelves for a certain amount of time, they throw on a "Manager's special" and you can often find them at 30%-50% off, sometimes more. Also, show prices can be cheaper at times because there is more localized competition (they are also often willing to negotiate because they do not want to have to haul their merchandise back with them).
Good luck! And again, nice looking babies :)

Thanks for that. I looked long and hard at both sizes, but the smaller size was the only one on sale and as I was already bucking convention and moving him out of the KK, I made the decision to get the smaller on sale one. Dang. CL is a great idea. I guess I was a little leary because of potential disease and/or damage, but I guess as with everything check, check, and double check, and then taking the time to sterilize. I will keep my eye out there for sure. I am weighing the babes on my kitchen food scale that will measure in grams. Not sure it is the best way, but its what i have and it appears to be working. Noumea is 3 gm and he hatched around mid January. I have no idea about a hatch date on Tabasco, but just his body shape and size, his behavior make me think he is barely more than a hatchling. He weighed in at 2 gm. He sleeps on the floor of the KK and not in the leaves. He goes into the leaves when he is moving around, but everyday he has been here, he sleeps all day on the floor. Noumea always slept in the leaves. I am not sure if that is a baby behavior or just the way he rolls! I also have noticed with him a huge difference in his pupils. They seem nonexistent. When he is awake and very very alert, they are there and small, but when he sleeps his eyes are just blank. Also wondering if this is a baby thing, or just his characteristic. At any rate, they seem to be thriving. He can definitely see, so I am not worried he is blind or anything, just find it interesting. I am bummed my exoterra is too small, but I imagine it will be quite some time before it becomes too small, so I will just buy everything else accordingly. Thanks so much for your advice and for the compliments on my babies. I had no idea what to look for in a gecko, so I just said give me one and got Noumea. I think he is beautiful, though he may not be the loveliest and most unique of all. I really wanted a dark red one and found Tabasco as Petsmart and decided he would be joining the family!

They are nocturnal, so their eyes are very sensitive to light. I imagine that is what you are seeing in terms of pupil size. Also, they have no eyelids, so their irises close when they are sleeping.
As with anything used, make sure you sanitize well. I sanitize everything (new and used) but do it twice with used supplies. I do a bleach run, let it dry completely, then a day or so later do it with ammonia to make sure I have covered all the bases. If you do that, just make sure there is plenty of drying/dissipation time between the steps. As you know, bleach and ammonia DO NOT mix.

Maybe since Noumea sleeps tucked into the leaves, i have not noticed his pupils close when he is asleep but with Tabasco right out in the open, he has been easier to observe. I just dont bother them at all during the day so they can stay on the schedule that is natural for them. I really appreciate your good help!

Well, I guess he is showing me. Every evening after dark, I come take a peek and Noumea will be on the floor gazing at or giving the stink eye to Tabasco over in the critter keeper. I mist the enclosures and when I do, Noumea runs straight into the stump thing and stays there, like he is getting in out of the rain. I check several times throughout the evening and he will still be in there hanging out, so I guess he likes it. Come morning, he is back in his hanging pothos, sleeping peacefully! Funny little geckos!

IDK if any one has talked to you much about feeding...heres my input. You need to stop feeding crickets until your geckos are 100% hooked to the CGD? It may take a few weeks. They will hold out and wait on the crickets if they know they are coming!

I feed CGD on Mon, Wed, and Fri. They get crickets on Sat. :) But they stay on nothing but the CGD for a month so I know they are eating it!

Thanks so much for your reply. I have read extensively about feeding and talked to several breeders and it seems everybody has their own idea about what works best. The gecko that I got from the breeder was already eating both, so I stuck to his schedule. The gecko from Petsmart I imagined that he had only been offered crickets since its the easiest thing to do. I offered him some CGD off my finger on Monday after having eaten 4 crickets on Friday, and he actually was more excited about it than Noumea is. He would actually open his mouth and "bite" the food off my finger. They are both pooping regularly, so I feel confident that they are getting sound nutrition. I am ever alert to any changes, in the event I need to make alterations to my present feeding schedule. I so appreciate any and all suggestions and pointers.

we had a....lovely discussion re: the benefits of feeding crickets vs. CGD a few months back. If you search this forum for a thread named "spoiled by crickets" you'll find a lot of good info put forward by both sides of the table. just pick through the squabbling.

i personally have chosen to feed crickets and fresh fruit while Scorpio is actively growing, but plan to make CGD a much larger portion of his diet when he's an adult. That decision is mostly based on his preferences, but I also just like watching him hunt. When I go out of town, I leave CGD in for him and he eats that just fine. There are tons of people who go the strictly CGD route and they have perfectly healthy geckos. If that's your plan, then yes, get him eating the mix regularly before you try crickets.

halo that's wonderful that you have 2 geckos that both love the CGD. My bigger girl Quin will eat the GCD but I have never seen and empty dish. My new baby (and I mean baby waiting for the gram scale to get here later today but I'm thinking 5 grams or less) isn't too into the CGD even when offered from my finger. :( I have had Pip just shy of a week so she is still getting the hang of the CGD. I have the mango flavored CGD on the way so maybe they will both love that!

I also want to say that it is wonderful to hear of someone "doing their homework" before getting a new pet!

I am over the moon right now! I came in the room tonight after dark and found Tabasco, the tiny Petsmart gecko, with his face in the CGD bowl eating! I just fed them last night and fed them both on my finger and always offer it to them in the bowl, so they dont just associate the diet with my finger. I was so excited to see my littlest baby eating like a big gecko!
I am also still waiting on the new decor I ordered to arrive but I am so impatient I decided to make some changes to it in the meantime! I got a smooth branch from the backyard, soaked in a bleach water solution, scrubbed it and rinsed it to death, baked it in the oven for an 1.5 hours, and then took it outside to air out in the sunshine. It turned a beautiful rusty red color. I added it to Noumea's terrarium and then tonight I found at Freds, some variegated ivy garland. I washed it good in soapy bleachy water, rinsed well and hung to dry. I wound it around the branch and then bunched it up around his feeder dishes to give him some privacy and security when he decides to eat. I still have a few things coming to add, including a magnetic feeder ledge and a standing plant deal. I think it is looking really pretty. I will also have enough stuff leftover to get started on Tabasco's bigger terrarium when the time is right, and of course I made him a little tiny stick to go in his kritter keeper. I took a picture of the new set up and I would love some feedback on how its coming along! If its not obvious..........I AM HAVING THE BEST TIME WITH MY LITTLE GECKOS!
