Im new to the gecko world... but have had 3 previous geckos... rescued from other's who could not longer keep them...

Information I've recieved has been from researching geckos. so some proper advice would be muchly appreciated.

I recieved a 2.5 year old gecko whom up until a month ago was eating meal worms and the odd wax worm. She stopped eating and from what I assume became gravid? 2 weeks went by and what seemed to have happened was her tail became thinner she stopped eating all together, but was still active and alert... I took her to my vet we ran blood and did x rays on her... her calcium levels where high but she had liver and heart failure going on as well over the past two weeks i had given her some a/d slurry by syringe and this morning she was having so much trouble breathing she had her mouth open, breathing through her mouth?. I couldnt stand to see her in so much pain ..so we humanely euthanized her... point of the thread is... an autopsy was done there was fluid around her heart and lungs, her liver was enlarged and dis color but the vet told me it looked as if she has cystic ovaries... has this ever happened to any one.. I do have a photo of the autopsy, but it is graphic, please be polite as this has been a stressful day for me.

muchly appreciated

Thanks for sharing all these details, Jen. Sorry to hear about your 2.5 yo female leo. May she rest in peace.

What caused her liver and heart failure? Was there hepatic lipidosis? What type of diet had she been eating?

I once had a wild caught female flying gecko (Ptychozoon kuhli) die from a cystic left ovary. Did your vet mention what might have been the cause?

I, for one, would appreciate it if you shared the necropsy photo even if graphic.

Thank you for replying so quickly, once she was opened up we did find out she had hepatic lipidosis, and a severe amount of fluid in her chest and around her heart. She ate store bought crickets meal worms and the odd wax worm on occasion. I'll pm you the photo I don't want anyone offended. She also didn't mention a cause of the cystic ovaries just that there was clearly something wrong and she wasn't able to pass them down the
Fallopian tubes properly.

The cysts on the ovaries are normally harmless. Do you have the necropsy witten report and lab work results?

You're welcome, Jen. I will PM you my email for the picture(s) and even the necropsy/histopathology (?) written reports if you have such.

Just wondering what you fed the crickets and mealworms once you brought the feeders home.

Happy Spring days ahead......
