Zoo Med Repti-Calcium without D3 - got my package today and it smells kind of rank.

So I got my repti-calcium today in the mail. The first thing I noticed was that the package had already been opened, likely by Canadian customs, as it was shipped in here from Florida. I guess "opened" isn't the right word; crushed suits it better. There was spilled calcium in the box and the seal had already been broken, but the jar was still twisted shut, so I figured it would be okay.

When I unscrewed the lid to take a look, I noticed there was a peculiarly 'earthy' smell to it. Almost like bad breath. Now I'm conflicted about whether or not I should feed this to my gecko. Does the zoo med repti-calcium typically have a smell to it? I've read online that calcium carbonate should have no smell at all. Has it been contaminated or gone bad?

What do you think?

I went and took a whiff of mine just for you, no odor at all. If yours smell funny, and you see calcium spills inside the packaging, I would return it and say it was damaged goods. You shouldn't be charged for it, they should send you new ones.

Mailing white powder, even in official packaging, is always risky. It wouldn't surprise me that they opened it to check for hazardous material.

That brand is easy to find here, and probably cheaper than shipping across the border.
