Newbie in need of guidance

Hi, we have had our gecko for a little over 2 months now and he settled in really well. My son can now regularly handle NEO with no obvious signs of distress. However we have noticed a few changes which I hope you can help me with as petstore owners seem to contradict each other!

As said, NEO settled in well - he feeds well, seems happy to be handled and was usually poking around his tank from early evening time. He would regularly sit on one of his rocks just basking. However over the last 2-3 weeks, NEO has stopped coming out of his hide - he comes out at feeding time, then goes straight back into the hide again. I have checked temperatures (around 70 in the cool zone and about 85-88 in the warm zone) He still eats fine, and does not seem to show any objection to being handled. I have searched many sites, but they all come back to geckos being nocturnal, which is fine, except NEO was always out and about of an evening time....so why the change? Is hiding away typical behaviour for a leo or is this indication of some problem??

Second question - I have realised just how many people do not recommend the use of sand, so I will be removing the sand this weekend. The one half of NEO's tank is 'decorated' with a selection of rocks that we collected (they were all washed thoroughly in boiling water). Are rocks suitable substrate for the whole tank, or does NEO still require something like the papertowels or tiles?

Final question - we were told NOT to keep a moist hide in the tank as this caused respiratory problems. We were told a moist hide should only be used when there were signs of NEO shedding, but this seems contrary to posts various forums? Should NEO have a warm dry and a warm moist hide all of the time? And on that score - we have had NEO for 2 months now, but there has not been any signs of him shedding at all. Is that normal?

I think that's it for now :D on behalf of NEO we would really appreciate any guidance or thoughts - particularly in relation to the possible reasons why NEO has stopped coming out of his hide.

He definitely needs access to a moist hide at all times. If you haven't seen him shed this is not something to worry about as they tend to be secretive about it and eat the skin as they go. Just monitor for stuck shed on his toes and eyes.

It is very common for a leo to start hiding more due to the stress of handling. Some become so uncomfortable that they hide when they know you are around and will only come out when food is offered.

So if the hiding is through stress of handling, is it best we stop handling him altogether, or go right back to basics and start again with a small amount of interaction building up to actual handling?

I just typed a little over 2 paragraphs and I was timed out. :-x I don't have the energy to retype right now.

Are you sure you want me to answer this question? I can only tell you what I would do, stop handling him. I do not handle my leos unnecessarily. I sit back and just enjoy watching them thrive in their little world. Two of my leos simply lost most of the fear after some time. They know that my presence = food. They do not give me a very hard time during examination. I have never tried to "tame" these two.

On the other hand the oldest male is fine with my hand in the enclosure, however turns into the road runner when I pull him out of the enclosure. This leo was only a few months old and was suffering from calcium deficiency when he was handed to me. In order for me to monitor his condition closely, I did try placing my hand in patiently and just about everything one can try to make him comfortable with me to no avail. After years of trying, I realized this was just who he was and he would never change.

The last one mentioned would also hide a lot. After a few months of me giving up, he started coming out more, appears much more content and confident walking around. I would never attempt to force the situation regardless ever again.

We will do whatever is best for NEO - so will tell my son "hands off" and we'll see how it goes. And this weekend he gets a new tank set up too, with no sand and a new moist hide - so hopefully he will be a happy little chap in a day or two. Thank you for your replies they have been really helpful.
