Humid hide "Paint Smell"

Hey everyone!!

I recently purchased the Zoo Med 3 in 1 hide. I have had one for about 4 months now and it works great!! But my geckos are getting bigger so i decided to purchase a bigger sized one.

I bought it from the same place as before (Local reptile store) and got some new moss (same as i used before.)

As I went to re spray the moss, The entire thing smelled like wet paint(but the color is not coming off of it.) My smaller one never had that problem. Also, I noticed mold growing inside my moss. I quickly took it out and cleaned it and put new moss in it. After cleaning it, I can still smell a strong wet paint scent. My geckos seemed to use the wet hide for a little bit, but I havent seen them in there for almost over a week. The smaller hide has never had the smell or mold problem, (i use the same moss in both)

Is the smell/fumes dangerous for my geckos? and how do i get rid of that smell?

I let it soak in really hot water for about 15 minutes then used soap and did a rinse with hot water.

I agree, if it smells the way you're describing, I would not use it. Just make sure it's coming from the hide before you throw it out. I've had all mine for years now and I never noticed any smell even when they were new. And let me tell you that I have a bad habit of smelling everything. Of course I'm not there to smell it so think wisely.
