Gekko species for a 40 gallon vertical terrarium?

Hello,

I just put the finishing touches on a 40 gallon vertical aquarium--dimensions are 18" W 16" L 36" H. Would this tank be suitable for a pair of any Gekko species, like goldens or white-lineds? I'm guessing tokays are too big.

Appreciate any feedback.

First off, Tokay pairs cannot be kept together year round so I'm guessing that goes for other Gekko species. The male will breed the female constantly and run down her nutrient reserves developing eggs and kill her.

I think it depends. I know people who manage it just fine, but I think it takes nutrition and monitoring to a higher level. Also, no matter what, you should be prepared to separate if needed for any group of geckos, bonded breeders or not.

I have a couple 40g breeders I converted to vert tanks that I keep Tokays in. it would be more space with a smaller Gekko species, but its doable with Tokays.
I also have a couple pairs of Tokays that have been together for almost three years, the female only lays seasonally and I'v seen nothing in her health to be concerned about.

And here in lies the rub. Some pairs will stick to the seasonal breading cycle and there by be housed together year round. While others will breed year round. How we as keepers "manage" their time together should be dictated by their breeding behavior and not our own whim.
