Uroplatus Henkeli Eye Swollen, Shedding Issue

Reptilius

Hello,

I have an issue with my Uroplatus Henkeli. A couple of days ago he developed an eye irritation and swelling. I have attached pictures of the problem. He is eating well and still moving around quite well. The issue with his eye seems to be a shedding issue, as there is shed stuck on his eye. I am thinking shed is stuck in his eye duct and is causing a blockage. I have put him in a closed container, with small breathing holes, and misted him heavily to raise humidity and this seems to be helping him. I would like advice from anyone who has delt with this issue before and how to remove the shed safely. Any positive, helpful tips are truly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello and a warm welcome to GU!

I have no experience with this species of lizard, however can try to help .

1. Keep on putting him in the mist box every night to help him, if you're lucky he may get it off, this however, is unlikely.

2. Do not try and remove the shed by yourself it is recommended take him to a reptile vet not a normal vet, the reptile vet will help take the shed off for you.

it's very difficult to tell from that photograph, but are you certain it's stuck shed in his eye and not pus draining from an infection? geckos don't have tear ducts so I'm not sure what would be clogged in this case.

I contacted a friend with very extensive Uroplatus experience who had this to add:
"It needs go to a vet. Eye infections in uroplatus require meds. Stuck shed wont cause an eye infection unless there is already something going on."

The answer is the same as it was days ago when you asked this same question in the uroplatus Facebook group. Most serious keepers here are in that group, and you won't hear a different answer. Take the animal to a vet.
