Oh, there is no reason to excuse yourself.
But just leave the common names behind please, it's a Paroedura
picta , all those common names only make things more complicated, since it is also known as panther gecko and who knows what else.
People calling them P. pictus is already confusing enough, since it's P. picta...
Anyway, we don't recommend keeping them too dry, what people tend to do in our opinion.
You can keep them on slate if you like, but keep in mind they do need some humidity.
We keep ours on an organic, peat based substrate wich also helps keeping their humid levels the way they should be.
