Wich species do you mean? There is more than one Paroedura species, and some with very specific husbandry requierments so please be more clear and try using the scientific names.

I was looking into the species "paroedura Pictus", which is apparently also known as the "painted big-headed gecko". Sorry If I wasn't specific enough.

Oh, there is no reason to excuse yourself.
But just leave the common names behind please, it's a Paroedura picta , all those common names only make things more complicated, since it is also known as panther gecko and who knows what else.
People calling them P. pictus is already confusing enough, since it's P. picta... ;)

Anyway, we don't recommend keeping them too dry, what people tend to do in our opinion.
You can keep them on slate if you like, but keep in mind they do need some humidity.
We keep ours on an organic, peat based substrate wich also helps keeping their humid levels the way they should be.

I will provide a hide with some sphagnum moss to create a humidity chamber. Will that be enough?

I can't imagine P. picta using a humid hide, but you can try it. They are a widespread species in Madagascar, and depending on the locality (and season) may have humidity ranges between 40 and 80% constantly; the local variability of the humidity in their environment is fairly low (excluding seasonal variation). In the field they are generally found on loose or solid substrate, often climbing to up to a metre or so above the ground, especially on boulders. Generally slate is probably preferable to sand, but may not be as appropriate as peat-based substrate used by Tamara.

Bear in mind that this information is based on field observation and not on experience keeping these animals. for that reason, I recommend taking it with a grain of salt, and preferring the expertise of experienced keepers like Tamara when it comes to keeping them in captivity.
