Good Morning everyone,

So we are back at it again. To recap my last post (it’s been buried and I don’t think anyone is reading it anymore) I’ve had my leo, Rizzo, for about two months now. After the first week or two she stopped eating. After a week of that, I took her and a poop sample to the vet who diagnosed a GI infection. First they gave me some drops, which I could not get her take. Then they gave me a round of antibiotic shots. 7 shots, one every 72 hours. Very small amount, but I don’t remember the name of it. She just had her last this past Saturday.

She was doing great after the second shot, eating like a pig. Then around shot 5 she stopped again, three days later (this past Friday) she became extremely lethargic. It was like a light switch flipped, I’ve never seen her like this before. If she’s sleep and I poke at her, she doesn’t even open an eye. Yesterday she had her shed and it was awful. You could tell she just didn’t have the energy for it. I found her sleeping in her warm hide with the skin completely attached to her whole head. I gave her a soak and carefully peeled it off from her face, feet, toes, and a little on her belly and tail. Thankfully she stayed pretty still through the whole process (I was nervous about getting it from around her eyes), but that just served to worry me more! She usually spends her entire soak trying to escape but she just…sat there and stared at me while I poked her in the face repeatedly with a Q tip. On the positive, she didn’t regurgitate what she was able to remove and eat.

I’ve made a vet appointment for first thing tomorrow morning, but I wonder what everyone else thinks? It’s just so weird. She went from super active, poking her head out whenever she heard my voice, investigating anytime she hears me moving something in her tank, constantly trying to crawl on my hand when I’m just trying to fill up her water dish or clean up poop. Then the next day she was just…blah. I actually lost sleep over this last night, especially after that awful shed. Could it be ovulation? The cold snap we just had? I can’t imagine it’s an infection anymore.

Husbandry is as follows:
20 gal long tank
Repit-carpet
Heating - UTH
Warm side – 85 to 90 degrees
Cool side – 70-75
Four hides, two on cool side, two on warm side (including the moist hide)
Before she stopped eating again, she was being fed dubias and mealworms.
She’s a rescue, so I don’t know how old she is. Estimate is 2-3 years old.

I honestly have no clue what to say except keep going to a vet. You may want to consider a change in vet. Try a reptile specialist.

Thanks for the reply.

It is very strange, isn't it? The vet I have now is an exotic animal vet with experience treating leopard geckos. She was the closest thing I could find to a HERP specialist in my area, and it's still farther than I want to travel. Also she wasn't like this the last they saw her, so I'll give them a shot at diagnosing hear.

Hi there! I know there's little to no chance for a response since this is an older post, but I thought I'd give it a shot. My gecko is exhibiting exactly the same symptoms, and I was wondering if you ever found out what was going on? I've taken my girl to the vet, but the vet just gave me some antibiotics and she doesn't seem to be getting better (4 days into treatment right now). The exotic vet was very nice but not very knowledgeable about reptiles, I suspect she works more with chinchillas, rabbits, ferrets etc. This is the first time any of my leos have become ill and I want to help her, any insight would be appreciated.

Yirra2112, please start a new thread. Besides being an old thread, it gets confusing to have two separate people posting problems in the same one. Also, it's easier to keep track if you have your own thread going.
