Cresties Traveling

Hi everyone, I am planning on getting a crested Gecko and want to hear your thoughts on crested geckos traveling. My family goes to our cottage about 4-5 times a year, either we go up for a weekend( I would probably leave him with an automatic mister if that would work out) or about 2 weeks at a time, I was planning on having a cage set up there to just transfer it in once we got there. I'm thinking that putting him in a deli cup with a damp paper towel and put in a dark box or something with good ventilation, the trip is about 4 hours. I could have someone maybe come and look after him if needed but it would really be easier to just take him. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Shoot, didn't realize I posted this in the wrong section, must've mis-clicked on my small screen, my bad! If someone could help me move this post to crested geckos or let me know how it would be greatly appreciated,

Since no one else has answered yet I will give it a go!

Going away for weekends isn't much of an issue. Make food and spray down the tank heavily. The amount of spraying you will need will depend on your substrate and the contents of your tank. An automatic mister will be fine for a 2 day trip and even longer.

A 2 week trip is a bit trickier. Are you having 2 cages (Cottage setup and home setup?)? Drives are pretty stressful but a four hour time period it would be fine in the conditions you said, however you should cushion the delly cup to prevent shifting around. Although you need to keep a close eye on the temperatures, never leave him/her in the car when getting food or stopping for a bathroom. The temperatures, assuming you have AC in the car should be no less than 65°F and no greater than 85°F to be safe.

Although multiple drives like that are very stressful, it would probably be better if you could get someone to pet sit. Though for reptiles I understand this can be difficult, when I had a pet sitter for my crestie I left a detailed paper on the things she had to do and showed her how to do it. It didn't really work out for us though, she didn't quite follow my instructions but everyone is okay. But since Cresties are pretty easy to care for you probably wouldn't have to pay the pet sitter much.

Good luck.

Ok, so I will definitely try to find a sitter and if I can't I will use your suggestions to make the trip better, do you think that he can go for a weekend without food? Yes I will have a cage at the cottage set up for him. Thanks!

Yes, he will be fine. If I ever leave for a few days I feed an extra insect and make some food the night before leaving. They are pretty hardy, I feed my gecko every other day as well so a weekend without food is fine.

No problem! :)
