tree fern panel

Does anyone have experience with using tree fern panel as background for Neon Day Geckos (smaller size geckos)? The temp/humidity are both consistently in high 80s and what I've read so far said tree fern does well w/ humidity.

My concern is will the gecko's get hurt by the material, or have trouble climbing on it? I previously built a tank and used expanding foam w/ silicone and coco fiber pressed on top, and my gecko wasn't able to grab/climb on that background, which I found really weird; that tank didn't end up being a good habitat for other reasons. So now I currently have them in 29g w/ cork panel as background and no problems, but I need to clean the cage and I would like to try the tree fern instead. I like the look of tree fern more than the cork, and it seems that w/ high humidity enclosures, plants will grow in/on it.

Thanks,
Vanessa
