Red toe after shedding, no visible stuck shed

My leopard gecko Linus shed the day before yesterday. There was no stuck shed anywhere, however I noticed one of his toes is dark red. He eats normally and doesn't seem to feel pain.

Is there a way to fix it? I'm afraid it will get infected. He is already on paper towels and I clean the tank regularly and remove any waste immediately. He has 2 tankmates but they don't bother each other at all as they are juveniles. I accidentally made another thread, it was an honest mistake. Please answer on this one

Redness indicates irritation/infection. Stuck shed could have wrapped around Linus's toe and reduced blood circulation. SSD 1% cream (silver sulfadiazine) can be prescribed by a vet. Alternately please pick up some neosporin withOUT pain relief. Apply this as directed on the container.

Please soak Linus in a sink in lukewarm water for 15 minutes. Watch him during this soak. Afterwards gently brush that toe outwards from his body with a soft-bristled toothbrush or a q-tip. That should remove any stuck shed. If you see shed beginning to come off but can't get it all, soak Linus again for 15 minutes.

3. What dimensions is your current enclosure that houses all 3 juveniles?
4. How soon will you be able to separate these 3 juveniles permanently?

Even juvenile leopard geckos can have a bad day and attack one another. If you have more than 1 male in that group, trouble may be on the way. Even similarly sized females can fight! That may be why Linus currently has/had a "squinty" eye.

Sexing Leopard Geckos -- A leopard gecko's gender can be confirmed when that leo is over 5 inches in total length. That may happen when the leo is near 6 months old. Males can be distinguished from females by a distinct /\-shaped row of pores above the vent and by two hemipenal bulges below the vent. To see their vents, potential male pores, and hemipenal bulges gently press their bodies up against the glass. They'll squirm if you try to turn them over.

They are housed in a 24 gallon terrarium with 5 hides (some are smaller than others), 6 if you count behind one of the thermometers. They like to hide behind it.

I have one decently sized humid hide that they seem to like and I often see Linus in there. It's a small plastic tub that I made into a hide. It's usual temperature is about 89-90F. So far Linus is the only one to have a shedding issue, it worked out fine for Kyoshi and Atlas.

Kyoshi (the squinty eye one) turned out to have a particle in his or her eye that I'd missed. I got it out and Kyoshi is fine now.

I can separate them into different setups but it would have to be after I get more heating pads and decorations, though I haven't seen them fight, they tend to hang out in their favorite hiding spots until I turn the light off, then they run around. I can separate them though since I don't want them to get hurt.

Will Linus die from this?

What gender is Atlas?

Do you know about PetCo's $-per-gallon sales? Then PetCo sells a 20 long for $20. That's a 30 x 12 x 12 inch enclosure. Those would make ideal enclosures for 2 of your leos.​

I don't know. What do the directions say? It seems like if that's Neosporin without painkiller the label would clearly indicate that. Ointment is not good for reptile skin. Cream is better.​

Separating these 3 leos is a great idea! Let's do it! :banana:

Do you already have 2 additional enclosures? What size are they? I suggest buying what you need to house each leo separately.​

Will Linus die from this?

As long as you treat Linus's toe as I suggested to prevent any infection, he won't die from that.


Right now you're sitting on the brink of potential disaster. At any time your leos could turn on each other or gang up on one leo causing life-threatening injuries and even death. Nobody can watch their leos 24/7.

The only time leos need to be together is for breeding purposes.​
