Cleaning my Foam Background?

Hi, I've had my leopard gecko Zap for about 3 years now and bought him a foam background a year ago or so. I got it from the company Thrive (A World of Wonder). I was just wondering how I am supposed to clean it. The front side of the background is seemingly painted in black although the paint never chips. I disinfect the rest of his tank once a month but have never cleaned the background. Although, I do sometimes spot clean it with water if I need to get feces off. Zap enjoys climbing on it regularly trying to reach the top of his tank  So what should I do? Leave the background be? Spray it down while disinfecting his tank? Soak it in water? Let me know what you guys think! By the way, he has a 40-gallon tank if you are wondering about the size of the background.

No, I put it in there in a way that I could take it out if I need :)

I would remove it, Wipe or scrub away poop/urate, spray with F10 Veterinary disinfect, let it sit for 5 minutes, rinse well using plain water, allow to air dry, then put it back.
