Ok, I know all the basics about caring for leopard geckos, and one of our two geckos is growing beautifully. But the smaller of the two has been a very slow grower and has recently been losing weight. We believe its just over about 3 months old.
I generally feed it about 4-7 small crickets a night depending on how much it will take, and it has had a constant supply of mealworms which it was taking maybe one a day of. However, about a month or so after I got it, it refused to eat anything that was calcium dusted! It even spit out crickets and walked away from them if they had calcium on them. I experimented with 3 or 4 different brands, but it never took. So, it was fed undusted insects but had a full calcium bowl in its tank. (the other leo has no problem eating calcium dusted insects).
That all worked for awhile, but recently it stopped eating very much and has lost quite a bit of weight. It only eats one or two crickets a night if any at all (i find them in the tank the next morning) and has even threw up a mealworm and a waxworm... I thikn it may have to do with not getting enough calcium, but im not sure...
As of two days ago i started trying to feed it baby food. I read that was a good emergency option. I have read that you should use chicken baby food packed with calcium powder and either let your gecko lick it off its mouth or force feed it. I have tried both methods, but the gecko does everything possible to wipe the food off its mouth without swallowing any and resists force feeding as much as possible.
Does anyone have any good ideas? Ever been through this situation before? Please let me know!!
