Ceramic heater instead of red heat bulb

Hi there,

I have an adult leopard gecko and I am thinking about switching from the red heat bulbs to a ceramic heater. Should I do this or not? I bought a deep dome fixture from petsmart, will the heater be okay for the deep dome and lastly can it be placed on the the metal screen top?
