Hey everyone!
We had a couple more hatchlings pop out of their eggs last week so I got out the camera and snagged a few pics.
Without further delay...
This one hatched out last Friday so I called "him" Jason.

And here is a group shot of the 3 of them.

We have one more hatchling, but he was shedding at the time that I took the pics so I'll have to post some shots of him another time.
We also got a new pair a couple of weeks ago and are now going through undertaking of quarantining and acclimating. I did snap a couple of pics of them the other day though.

Hi.
Congratulations on the new babies, it is very good to see someone breeding Uroplatus. Hopefully in the future we can all make a difference to the number Uroplatus geckos coming out of Madagascar.
Keep up the good work, i'm sure you find it very rewarding anyway.

yes, very nice pictures and congrats on the success....i would keep your hopes up that the new hatchling "jason" actually turns out female....putting together the pieces, i've actually come up with a hypothetical way of determining the sex of satanics pretty early. more often you will find that female carry one, several, or all of the following traits: fairly solid patterning (males are more likely to have mottled color), no teardrop white spots beneath the eyes (or very reduced), and of course the lack of notches in the tail. granted, theres always the chance of getting a male with some or all of the aforementioned traits, but i would say you've still got good chances of that being a female, since i see from the pictures it seems "jason" has all of the traits of a female.

definitely a keeper, id say!

Thanks for the compliments everyone! :D
Working with Uroplatus is extremely rewarding, and I would encourage anyone who has a passion for geckos to endeavor to breed them. They are definitely a worthwhile project to undertake!

Mike - I agree with your theory on sex of the hatchlings, and I can even add that I have noticed that you can actually see little spurs on males practically right from the egg. I've also noticed that males tend to have spines on the base of their tails, whereas females tend to have smooth tails even if they do have notches. The pics don't really do this little guys tail or color any justice! I think if you saw him in person you'd be thinking that he is a he as well. He may actually end up being a holdback as he has some really awesome spines, and he really looks quite prickly! :D

musashi - We incubate the eggs on a shelf in the same room that we keep the adults in. The temp went down to 60 on some nights during the winter, but during the incubation of the eggs the average day to night variation was about 4 degrees and fluctated between 64 and 70.

Josh - I think the key to our success with breeding these guys and raising the hatchlings has been our diligence with temps, humidity levels, and feeding regiments. Uroplatus in general seem to be pretty unforgiving when it comes to slacking on any one of those things. If your ebenaui are fresh imports you may be waiting up to 2 years before you see viable eggs, so a little bit of patience is involved in this as well. If you don't have it already try to get your hands on Neil Meister's article on phantasticus and ebenaui in Reptiles magazine. I can't remamber what month it was printed, and I lent out my copy so I can't check either. If you give me the specifics of what you have been doing (cage setup, temps, humidity, etc.) I might be able to give you a little better advice.

The new female is beginning to look a little "bumpy", so here's to hoping for a new bloodline of cb soon!
