When putting with a male cresty together?

Hi,

My two elderly female cresties are now around a year or even 13/14 months old.

I wonder how I should still wait to bring them with a male together? Their weights are 37 and 45 grams.

I have the impression that they could still grow if I comare them with other adults I've seen at breeders places ... (Their my fist dresties) ...

In american pages I've read that one should wait about 14 months ...

How long are you, experienced breeders, wait to put them together ...?!

Thanks for informations ...

Best regards
Peter

I personally wait until mine are 12 months, or 35 grams. After the first season and a few month break they will usually hit 40-45 grams, and slowly put on weight each season.
There always the argument that you should wait longer, but there's no need to in my opinion. Just try to avoid breeding a 25 gram female, and you should be fine.

Thanks Andrew!

I thought that they won't gain weight after they were the first time pregnant ... ?!

But when you experienced:
and slowly put on weight each season
, that means for me that they grow nevertheless they where laying eggs ...

Thanks, so I think I will put a male to the two one year old females ...

Wonder what will happen ...

just make sure to give them a nice break without the male in the cage sometime during the year. I like mine to not lay clutches for atleast 3 months out of the year. they do retain sperm, so the female can lay eggs for 6 months or more after the male has been removed! try it out this season, and pull the male out if your female starts losing too much weight. good luck.

Thanks Andrew for all your help & advises!

I did put the male to the two female and he straightly 'jumped' up to them ... !
Even he's quite a lot smaller (about 22 gram - he looks from the head older than he has weight ... :? , I don't know the age, I forgot to ask when I bought him at Hamm this springtime, I bought him from Mark Bells wife ...) he was grasping to the girls ... !

So I guess soon I have to search for eggs in the enclosure ...

I looking forward ...

I'd be careful with his weight, new males usually only one to do one thing and thats breed sometimes they will even not eat bc of that. So if you notice that going on at at all I would get him out rigth away. not telling you what to do I would just be carefull with him being that light. how much do your females weigh in at? cause if they are to light they can have a lot of problems down the road. I never bred a female under 35 grams.

Thanks,

I will observe him! I thought for the male isn't the weight a problem, because they don't have to develop eggs like the females ...?!

The weight of the females stands in my first post.

I'll keep an eye on him ...

Maybe he's hungry is gorwing at such a lot of sport .... ;)

Best Regards
Peter
