wild Phelsuma in the United States, species?

I am curious as to which Phelsuma species are currently establishing wild populations in the United States. I know of Grandis in Florida, and possibly guimbeaui in Oahu. Are there any other's I am missing? Also, if guimbeaui are so rare in collections, why aren't people working on obtaining them from Hawaii? I am just too curious sometimes.

I believe since guimbeaui isn't native to hawaii and the fact that they were brought to the isalnd makes them shipable. I believe laticauda are native though and can't be shipped.

Phelsuma is endemic to Madagascar and adjacent islands. They evolved no where near Hawaii - they are not native to anywhere in this hemisphere. Hawaii actually has no native herpetofauna. Damn shame, in many regards those islands are better evolutionary arenas than the Galapagos and our species has destroyed their integrity.

Hawaiian Phelsuma were exported at one point, and I'm not sure why they aren't anymore. I used to have "Hawaiian" P. laticauda - just like everything from Madagascar that was coming in during those days. I am under the impression that P. guimbeaui was always rare in Hawaii, and only a few knew where to find them. P. grandis can also be found there. I think P. laticuada and P. lineata can also be found in Florida.

Ok here's the scoop on Hawaii:

My buddy just picked up and moved out there on a whim with his wife, so naturally I asked him to see if he could catch any Phelsuma and ship them to me...

No deal. All Phelsuma are, under Hawaii state law, in a class of non-native herp that prohibits their capture and possession. There is actually no law against exporting Phelsuma from Hawaii, but its pretty hard to export them without catching and keeping them for a bit. Needless to say the penalties are severe. The first day he moved there he caught 35 laticauda in the Kona district on the Big Island. Laticauda were introduced to the islands in the 1970's and are now established and breeding on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. P. m. grandis and guimbeaui are much less common, but can be found on Oahu.

There are many other gecko species introduced to Hawaii and they are all fare game for catch and export.. House geckos, mourning geckos, 4-clawed geckos, ect...

This info comes from speaking to someone in Hawaii who works for the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife

In Florida I have only heard of grandis being established and breeding in the very southern counties on the mainland and also on many of the keys. But there may be laticauda and others by now...

vertebrate export permit

My recent experience with Phelsuma in Hawaii:

To export the three species of Phelsuma from Hawaii to mainland USA, you need an export permit. I have been speaking with people who issue the permits in preparation for a trip there to collect for www.geckoweb.org. The way it was explained to me was that you apply for a permit, get a HI DLNR person to accompany you into the field, then they take possession of the Phelsuma and will meet you at the airport when you are flying out.

Mind you, this was for scientific collection and export of live specimens.

Hey Joe,

It is great to be able to collect these. I brought back some Phelsuma madagascariensis grandis from the FL Keys this spring. I was hoping for a collecting trip to Hawaii, but that will have to wait a while. The folks at HI DLNR were really helpful and did not try and discourage me from collectiing, they just wanted me to follow procedure and file the appropriate paperwork.

To see Phelsuma in the sun in Florida was amazing. They glow! The colors are rich and vibrant. I can only try to imagine what it must be like to see many species in the wild in Madagascar, the Seychelles, Mauritius... That would be an amazing trip (especially with some collecting permits...).

Yuri,

Let me just say that I daydream about going Phelsuma collecting every day...

I'm finally starting to get to the point where I could make it a reality!

Getting those permits sounds painstaking, I wouldnt even know where to start.
