Thing to have on hand for fresh imports

Since most of the Uroplatus offered are WC, what should one have on hand when the animals arrive? A method of hydration, a suitable enclosure and food w/ supplements are a given. Anything else you like to have ready? Meds, special tools (eye dropper maybe), particular foods that are eagerly taken?

A frequently used and refilled water bottle, a simple cage set up. Thick paper towel substrate, a few branches or pothos plant. Mist heavily and often, but not enough to let water stand. Crickets are a normal food item usually eaten without protest. I use a Rep-Cal/Herptivite Mix to dust crickets. Sometimes tweezers can be useful in helping to aid shedding.
Mites are common, but I don't know any of the methods for getting rid of them on geckos.

Cure for the mites

A good trick for mites is extra virgin olive oil on a q-tip and dab the mite. They will not be able to breathe and die but not hurt the gecko. It has worked for my fresh imports everytime. With uroplatus any of the commonly used mite sprays will most likely kill them, and any treatment for the cage will be washed away with misting and could be injested by the gecko.

But most good importers will not send you a gecko with mites. I know I dont send of mine out with mites.

I have noticed on the U. Piteschmanni that they get them on the toes and on the tails alot and U. Guentheri get them around the eyes or neer the vent. U.Phantasticus and U. Ebenaui are some times harder to find depending on the colors but are normaly on the neck and sides. And not to forget the U.Sikorae and U. Fimbriatus who just seem to get them every where. I have not seen any on U. Lineatus but I have only had a few pair of these.

Give it a shot if you have the red or black mites they will be off in a few min.

Also if I could I would like to recomend a "Shower Chamber" for the fresh imports or any Uroplatus. I have my Shower Chamber set up with an all screen plastic cage (Reptiratum I think they are called(I can never spell that ))that I have fake plants attached to the top and sides and a few brown PVC pipes for branches. I just place the new arivals in the shower chamber and stick in the shower with room temp for about 15-20 min and let it drip for about 10 min and do it again. I have found it is the best way to hydrate them and it sometimes gets them to call!

I do this with all the Uroplatus geckos every so often and it will freak my wife out when the shower is on and she thinks I am in it and I am in the computer room or the gecko room LOL!

Some one may have a better idea but this is what works for me.

Sorry for the long post !

Thanks

Mike

since mite sprays were brought up...i would recommend staying away from a product called "provent-a-mite." it can cause more trouble for you than the good it does by getting rid of mites.

Can you please explain how?

Also, I have heard and seen the shower method used as well. It is indeed very helpful. I've yet to hear those calls though...that must be pretty cool.

The calling was from a phantasticus but I have noticed that he is a "talkative" little guy. I have heard it once before on a pietschmani but that was after the shower durring the dripping. I may have gotten lucky and got some noisy little geckos!

You still breeding the Uroplatus Robert? I am goingt o be receiving a large shippment of Uroplatus and some other rare Paroedura geckos from Madagascar this month let me know if you are interisted in any thing or if you have some CB up for grabs. I will see what I can get if you want.

Thanks

Mike
