Abnormality in grandis

Talking to Joe Farah about this one female grandis I have, it came to our attention that she has an odd lump by her pelvis. I did not recognize this until she dropped a pair of eggs. I think she is too small at 5 inches to be dropping a clutch. Any idea what the diagnostic is?

she defenetly has Floppy tail. And that hump looks like a broken back kinda thing. Its happened to me before with a crested gecko that didnt get enough calcium and broke its back. That just what it looks like to me,no way to know without an x-ray.
Best of luck with her,

i'm more of the opinion that it looks like MBD (metabolic bone disease) which causes kinks in the spinal column of phelsuma's. It is not common, but it does happen. When she is sitting head downwards on a wall or such, does her tail flop over her head?

Also, yes, taht is far too small to be dropping eggs, in my opinion. perhaps they could not pass properly and broke the spine on the way out. This is unlikely however. Does she still have full control over such things as tail, toes, and hind legs?

I agree, it really is hard to tell wihtout an x-ray.

best of luck.

Her dark colouration is also a possible indication of stress or pain, which substantiates the fact that there is something obviously wrong with her. If you can get her safely to a good reptile vet that might be your best course of action.

She does not have floppy tail, and she seems in perfect motor control with her hind legs and tail.

in that case it is most likely, in my opinion, that she has MBD. I would advise taking her to a qualified vet, preferrably one who knows their stuff about geckos

MBD:

"Signs suggesting metabolic bone disease include a wavy spine, a kinked tail, 'soft jaw', and limb deformity. Even when these outward symptoms are not seen, a gecko may have seizures or may be unable to climb. Any of these symptoms can indicate that calcium deficiency has progressed to a serious stage. Immediate intervention is needed. A veterinarian needs to be consulted and the calcium and vitamin D3 supplement schedule needs to be reconsidered."

An extract from Leann and Greg Christenson's book "Day Geckos in Captivity.", page 96. (its certianly worth buying, by the way.)

Hilft das?
