How do I tell them apart?

How can I tell what kind of gecko I have? Either Phelsuma madagascariensis or grandis? new acquisitions, 25cm in length., been told they have bred once already, colours not as bright as many on here (mine are CB)

With mad mads they have a stripe going from their nose to thier eye and then it keeps going past the eye,But with mad grandis the red stripe stops at the eye.hope it helps.

Their greens will probably brighten up, but the reduced red might not get any brighter.

Bright lights, low stress, good health, good food... ect. When they are "happy" they should show better colors.

But you might just have some ugly grandis and there might not be much you can do

Time will tell. They should get better looking as they settle in and get comfy

am i the only one who thinks the one on the back wall in the last picture could be a Phelsuma madagascariensis kochi? the spots are not typical of even a stressed or underexposed grandis... or am i vastly mistaken?

i agree with you moof, i have a completly patternless grandis although it has no pattern its face has the crimson on its cheeks. And the green on a grandis seem to have a much brighter green then that, and all the grandis that i've worked with get a dark green color when they are stressed not a light color, so i would definatly say bohemi also becuase the red in that last picture doesn't look the same as grandis at all

I definately thought the one on the back wall looked a bit different when I first saw it too. He said they are CB though right.

I'll tell you though, grandis can vary quite a bit and that one is certainly not outside the normal range of grandis coloration.

Here is one I produced from normal looking parents.

When this girl darkens up the faint spots on her back get kinda purple-ish.

It's the reduced red in the head pattern in his that strikes me as a bit different.

i would be more inclined to think Kochi than Boehmei, because not only did i see kochi in the wild and when stressed i'm certain they get those very same spots on their sides, but also the muted colouration fits, and the nasal-optical line does not extend beyond the eye, whereas it does in Boehmei. Also, the legs have a dappled colouration to them in the last photograph, which is, as far as i know, not present in Grandis or Boehmei. Certainly, the extent of their red colouration cannot differentiate these from any of the subspecies. My best guess remains Kochi.

That's a P. m. kochi, found in Kirindy NP, W/SW Madagascar. Note the red on the back and the speckled legs and sides. -yes this animal was stressed from handling. :( -

I am pretty sure that it is a Mad kocht because the pattern is very different from a grandis and the skincolour is less greener than a grandis.

and of course not to forget

a grandis doesn't have spot at his both sides between his for-and behind legs
