Genetics...

This is a question for all the breeders out there. So, I have a normal female, and I would like to get a male. I was thinking of tangerine or albino. Are these two recessive traits? If I mated the two, how many would be normal, and how many would be either tangerine or albino (depending on which I choose)? Also, what are some other good dominant traits I could breed? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking of getting another female too, if that would matter to your opinions.

Thankya,
Nate

The normal gecko is dominant... or what I call the 'default' gene because all morphs are derived from the normals. All three albino strains, the Murphy patternless, and the blizzard morph genes are all recessive. If you crossed your normal with an albino, ALL the babies would be normals, but would be heterozygous (hets) for the albino trait. This means they would only carry the recessive albino gene, and will not express it physically.

So I would need to mate the two heterozygouses to get an albino? That may take a while, but thank you anyway. For geckos, is inbreeding ok, or bad? If it's bad, I definitely would need another female... correct?
Any other information on breeding genetics would be greatly appreciated.

IMHO it's never really a great idea to inbreed. However, if you have a one of a kind morph, and wish to make more of them, some line breeding is required. But since there's tons and tons of albino and het leos out there at affordable prices, there's no reason to inbreed just to get more albinos. Buy yourself an extra female (or better yet an extra 1.1 pair) and expand your bloodlines a bit. It's not like these are expensive or hard to come by.

Yes. But you would get:

25% normal
50% normal, het albino
25% albino

In this case, 75% of the babies would be homozygous normals and you wouldn't be able to tell which of those are the albino hets.

Thanks for all the advice and help. I was worried no one would respond... haha. So, if I got a 1.2 trio, would it be ok to keep the male in at all times? Should I only introduce him when I want them to breed? Do the females retain sperm?

Sorry about all the questions. Just need some answers ;)

Thats probably not the best idea to leave the male in at all times females need a break from breeding. Its probably best you do a little more research and look at a few caresheets.
