They just got here and I wanted some input. One lost its tail during shipping and there is a stool in the container that is undigested. They are each 3 grams the yellow one is suppose to be male while the red is suppose to be female.
What do you think? Is it me or is the red showing a bulge?
:?

They're both gorgeous. I can't wait to get myself a pair.

The red one does look to have a small bulge. And as for the stool, it could potentially that the temperature during shipping wasn't adquate to provide thorough digestability. It could also be stress-realted from the shipping. Were these treated for parasites before you bought them?

it's not necessarily stool. it could very well be regurgitated food. i had a satanic that arrived under very similar conditions, dropped tail and regurgitated crickets. it didnt last the night. thenagain, it could just be that it had a rough ride.

if i were you, i would get some forceps and help peel off that incomplete shed. make sure to get those two well hydrated too.

I'd say the red is the male and the yellow is the female, but that is based upon tail and eye marking characteristics, not bulges. Bulges are definitive but at just three grams they are too small to be 100% accurate. Was there any cushioning in the deli cup during shipping?

not much at all, just a little. The other one who did not drop the tail had more in w/ her.

I'm not sure if the red one is going to make it seems like its going down hill. Plus the shipper still has not gotten back to me about them not being the correct sex. Not sure what to do about that?

Keep trying to get the dealer/importer to respond. Most dealers, except those that are super cheap, care about their reputation and will try and make things right. As for the other matter of the geckos looking ill after shipping and loosing it's tail, I'm sorry to say this but it's chances are slim. Hydrate it well, Keep it in a secluded location at room temperature with high humidity. Fatalities with WC Uroplatus shortly after shipping are, unfortunately, very common and also among other reasons why CB are so much better. The loss of the tail is not in and of itself a death sentence, I have one male who's tail was lost very early on is alive and thriving and is now just reached maturity. One of the females he is with has been under a pile of leaves all day which pretty much means she is looking for a place to lay.

As for the shipping, 10 cents worth of moss might have made a difference. Cushioning and humitity. Again, contact the dealer regarding the problem.

The problem with the uroplatus business is that 99% of the people with the exporter contacts dont give a crap about these animals or your repeat business. Thats why i left this bussiness years ago. Come back and its still the same crap. If we could get 1 person that was in this for the preservation of the species instead of the all mighty dollar we would all be better off and so would the animals coming into this country. If a person isnt willing to stand by what he sells for at least a week after the customer gets them that says alot about who and what the person is. It sucks being forced into doing repeat business with scum bags just so you can get the animals your looking for. I could go on and on and on and on....

Sorry you had a crap experience bro, welcome to the world of uroplatus importers, better get use to it, ive yet to find one i like doing business with or that i even respect as a human being.:-x:-x:-x....

i can say with good certainty that your sexes were mixed up in your original post. from the visual ive gotten of each animal, the yellow is female, red is male.

as for the seller, yes, that can be a difficulty. i would not discount every one out there. i used to gripe about not being able to get satanics for $50/each anymore. later, i took things into perspective. prices have gone up for a reason. sure, sometimes individuals will sell "cherry picked" animals that deserve a higher price for what they believe qualifies as exceptional animals, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. the vast majority of the time, as far as the life/health guarantee goes, it will not reach past 24 hours. i dont think ive ever seen an offer of more than a day, except in one case with an animal i bought, because of shipper's error, i got a one month extended guarantee.

gary, as far as the issue you stated....we can all agree that pretty much all uroplatus are sensitive animals. the vast majority for sale are recent imports. if someone were to really import any significant numbers in anticipation of housing them, acclimating them, and getting them into primo condition before they're sold and shipped off again, you're looking at paying a higher cost than what is seen out there as it is now. so, you'll have those who import then get those animals right back out the door, selling for $100-150 on average to make a bit of profit, then you'll have the "dedicated" importer trying to sell animals at $300+ to make the same profit margin as the in-and-out sellers. people will moan and groan about the prices, and go with the cheaper animals. just like the hobbyist, the importer loses animals and cant get money back for them either.

i know of importers that are very conscious of their animals' state of health, those that wont ship out questionable animals. i also have seen importers at reptile shows that have dead animals in deli cups on their tables.

i could go on and on.

lesson being, as the usual lecture goes, talk to the person selling you your animals. if you find someone who actually knows a thing or two about the animals you're buying, chances are you've got a good seller. if you've got someone that cant give you any details and cant properly give you correspondence, you've got the wrong person.

the vast majority of my purchases were at reptile shows from a specific vendor, and i always hand-picked the animals. priority was not the color, rather it was the state of health. i have also had vendors lie to me straight to my face. but i never bought from them.

point being, i never had a bad deal when i bought the animals in person. the animals were always bought in good shape and they stayed that way. all of the questionable dealers ended up with bad experiences.

so i learned my lesson.

patience is key.

mike,

I agree with you 100%. I make most of my purchases when I am at a show or otherwise can buy the animals in person. It is obvious if the seller cares for the animals at all when you talk to them or have a look at the rest of the reptiles they have for sale. There are a very few decent people out there importing. Another thing is, I have worked for UPS and it scares me to death to think of shipping fragile little uroplatus.

well...live and learn. These guys are a small project for me. I was thinking of a total of 4 in that tank and thats it. Just need to find 2 more females and then I'm done. I like them a lot but this whole thing has put me off the shipping them thing. I'm waiting for shows from now on. The guy I bought them from sent me one email saying when he got more in he would send me 2 more to make up for it. But did not explain or anything. I'm thinking I wont get them and I will never hear from him. But we will see.

you've gotta keep in touch periodically and hold onto those emails, because they're written conversation of his intentions to make good on the deal. dont give up on it, or you'll simply lose in the end.

several years ago, i made a big trade with a wholesaler i did a lot of business with. i traded something like 20 geckos in return for 10 leaftails, and it took about 6 months for them to make good on the trade. i had a number directly to the manager, who is the one i negotiated the trade with, who never returned any of my messages. i called and called and called. eventually, i found the business at a reptile show, only to find out he moved on to another job. fortunately, the new manager kept in touch and let me know when a fresh shipment came in, and i got all i was planning on picking up. it was a nightmare, but worth it in the long run, because they gave me an extra henkeli for my troubles.

Update-
I have been keeping up with this guy and have called my credit card co. They told me that they would get all my $$$ back including the shipping for me. I turned around and told him all of this and wow after emailing him for over a week w/ no response he sends me an email back within 2 hours! lol, Might of helped that I told him I would go to the fauna boards and B**** about him. He is sending me 2 more free of shipping costs next week. Or so he said. I also got him to send better pictures of the animals he is sending with rear shots so I could tell the sex myself. I'm not gonna let up on him and I'm keeping ALL our emails and pictures!
Thanks Guys!
