Silicon Question

Hey everyone, I'm setting up a viv for my first leachie that I plan on getting in the next month or so. I decided to try the Great Stuff, silicon and substrate route for the vivs background. In the related threads I've looked at I have not found many specifics on the silicon used. So, I ended up finding brown window/door silicon sealant with 'Bio-Seal Mildew Blocker' in a caulking tube. Is this the right stuff and is this 'Bio-Seal' safe for geckos?

Thanks,
Matt

Hi,

No, that is not what you really want. The mildew and anti-fungus silicones contain arsenic (that's what kills the mildew/fungus. What you want is aquarium or food grade silicone. I believe Home Depot carries a GE silicone that is food grade (for use in dishwashers/refridges). Careful as GE also makes outdoor anti fungus silicone also. If you go to an aquarium shop they will have aquarium grade but it is about three times the cost in a petshop versus Home Depot or Lowes.

Most likely in a leachie tank you would only spray the sides of the tank and leaching of the arsenic would be minimal and probably never harm your leachie. But, I always take the safe route and use aquarium grade (in an aquarium the water is always in contact with the silicone so leaching of the arsenic is continual and it builds up in the water). So, what you have is probably OK, but a best choice would be to return it for the aquarium/food grade.

Thanks John. When you say 'spray' do you mean it is sold in aerosol cans as opposed to caulking tubes? As you said though the aquarium silicon is to pricey especially to cover the back of a 50 gallon, plus aquarium silicon isn't colored.

Thanks again,
Matt

Sorry, I did not communicate my thoughts clearly. I was talking about watering the terrarium. What I meant was in the completed terrarium (once the silicone cured) with the leachie living in it, you would spray water on the terrarium occasionally for humidity and drinking (although mine drink from a bowl, so mostly for humidity). The water sprayed on the glass and tank would only have a short contact time with the silicone, so the arsenic would leach out of the silicone at only a minimal amount. You need (and should) only use as much silicone as needed to get the job done.

Basically, commercial grade silicone has arsenic in it for antifungal reasons and this arsenic can/will leach out when in contact with water. Since a terrarium (without free standing water such as a pool) would have little water contact with the silicone, the arsenic only leaches at a very slow rate. This rate is probably (but not guaranteed) to be non-lethal to the inhabitants. If there is a waterfall or pool that contacts the silicone the leaching of arsneic (or other toxins used to kill mold/fungus) is a real issue. If you use a food/aquarium grade the leaching of arsenic/toxins is a non-issue. I hope I cleared it up.

John

I'm deffinately going to keep looking for food grade silicon then, and I'm sure glad I asked, that's a big risk for such a pricey pet. Thanks for all the help.

I looked at Home Depot and Lowes online, didn't see the food grade silicone listed. Home Depot has a 3 oz DAP aquarium silicone for $3.69. Better than at the pet shop but not as good as the $5.50 for the 10 oz commercial grade. I haven't needed the large tube fro a few years so that's the last time I bought a large tube from Home Depot. I have been using the small tube just for touch ups and additions (it doesn't store well after it's open so I only keep the small tube on hand).

Yeah I got the outdoor stuff at Lowes after finding nothing better there or at Home Depot. I plan to go check some local places for food grade. Thanks for checking.

Yes once GreatStuff is totally dried and cured its perfectly safe.

All silicone is the same. As long as it says 100% silicone its the same as all the other 100% silicone from what I have been told by a lot of people.

Thanks guys, I ended up finding DAP food grade silicon at Ace Hardware. Unfortunately it's not colored, but at least it's safe.
